Hidden Gems: Meet Samantha Kaufman of Riverside Canine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Kaufman

Hi Samantha , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I have always been driven by my lifelong passion for animals. My journey into the world of dog training began in childhood when I had an aggressive dog, which sparked my interest in understanding canine behavior. As soon as I was old enough, I pursued a job at a kennel because nothing could deter me from working with dogs.

At TopDog Boarding & Training in Gilbert, AZ, I gained valuable experience and had the privilege of learning from certified dog trainers. Over three years, I dedicated myself to mastering training philosophies and learning the ins and outs of kennel life. After relocating from Arizona, I continued my career at several training kennels, where I further deepened my knowledge of kennel operations while working closely with clients and their dogs.

With a strong affinity for dog psychology, I earned my certification as a dog trainer from Conifer K9

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
“When I first started out, I think people in my life saw me as an ambitious girl, but I’ll be honest—I didn’t have much discipline or confidence. I started at 18, working at a top-notch training kennel, and it was overwhelming and amazing all at once. I had so much to learn, and honestly, a lot of growing up to do. Becoming a dog trainer really pushed me to mature. I mean, I was still a young adult—I still am—but that experience shaped me in so many ways.

One of the biggest challenges I faced is something I think a lot of dog owners can relate to: how do you communicate effectively with a dog in a way that’s fair? Truly understanding what that means took time, effort, and a lot of self-reflection.

On top of that, I’ve dealt with anxiety and depression, which made some days incredibly tough. There were mornings I didn’t even want to get out of bed, but my dogs were always there, relying on me to show up and provide for them. That responsibility became a big motivator for me to keep pushing forward, even on the hard days.

I’ve worked so hard to get where I am now. Every step of the way, I’ve learned so much, grown as a person, and have became a better trainer—and a better version of myself. I also know there will be many more struggles along the way as well as growing but as one of my mentors always would tell me, “Pressure can do one of two things, it can burst a pipe or it can make a diamond.”
