Life & Work with Madison Alderink and Heather VanderMeulen of Grand Rapids

Today we’d like to introduce you to Madison Alderink and Heather VanderMeulen

Madison and Heather, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
We have always had a passion for thrifting, collecting and finding treasure, as one would say one mans trash is another mans treasure. Over the years we found ourselves gathering a curated collection of home decor, clothing, artwork, pottery and the like. With our houses fully styled and closets full we had the idea to share our passion with the public. We have always been told we have an eye for design and finding unique pieces and that we should start a shop of our own. We took their advice and opened up our own booth at Home & Heritage! We wanted to make shopping for specific pieces easy and affordable for all. We are having so much fun curating a space that feels like us and sharing the joy of fun eclectic pieces with others!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
With everything there are always a few bumps in the road. We have a large collection of items and find fun new pieces weekly so finding a place to store everything can be an issue. Of course that comes with the occasional broken item. Since this is our first time opening up a booth we were unsure how large of a booth we would need so we went with a smaller size and now realize we would love a bigger space. Renting booths at antique markets is a high demand area, we are on a few wait lists for other shops in the area, The down fall to that is not knowing how long it will take before a spot opens up! We would love to one day have our own independent shop.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
During the day we have two totally different professional careers. As an executive assist and a hair stylist we have both structure and the freedom of creativity. For Babe Cave Vintage we specialize in creating curated collections that make your home feel special to you. We are known for for our ease of style with unique one of a kind pieces. We are a mother daughter duo that likes to provide timeless yet affordable pieces in a space that gives you inspiration. this is what sets us apart from others. It is so exciting when people share how they have styled pieces they have purchased from us. There are a number of great vintage shopping places in the area. We pride ourselves on being selective in what we provide and how we style it for our customers.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
We source in completely different areas and often show up with matching pieces. We have an uncanny ability to show up in the same or similar outfit, we just have a connection and a sense that is truly special.
