Life & Work with KRW Music of Detroit

Today we’d like to introduce you to KRW Music

Hi KRW Music, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have always loved music! From being that little girl, going through my parents’ cd tower/cd book in the living room and making up random dance routines. Watching music videos on MTV or BET for hours and hours, deep down knowing I wanted to be some sort of music creative. I even tried being a rapper! Lol (I wish I still had the composition book). I honestly never thought about being a DJ. Until one day, in 2019, as I laid upside down in my bed, thinking what my next life move would be. I randomly had an epiphany. “I should be a DJ!”… At the time, I was a mail carrier in the city, and had been doing that for seven years, when I got injured and decided it was time to move on, and then I really had to sit with “What am I going to do now?!”.
During the lockdown, for my 30th birthday I received a DJ controller as a birthday gift. It actually took me a few months before I started practicing/using it, simply because I was overthinking! I finally realized, hey, you got to start somewhere! So I would sit on my couch and just practice day in and day out with house and techno music, until I landed my first gig!

I’ve studied so many DJs. So many greats, who have been in this industry for decades. Connecting with people when I’m not behind the decks, and just simply going out to dance and soak up that energy! Music is healing, and that is my purpose behind being a DJ!

It has been a very liberating experience. These four years have been very fulfilling, and I have learned so much! I even worked building stages for the Movement Festival, just so I could really grasp every aspect that goes into DJing! I have been blessed to play at some of the BEST venues in and around the city! Amongst some of the most talented DJs! I’ve made mixes that have been heard all over the world. I love what I do, and look forward to spinning and making music for people all over the world.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been the smoothest road, but it also hasn’t been the bumpiest! DJing has been one of the most fulfilling things I’ve ever done in my life! It brings me so much joy and it has also faced me with some challenging moments. I always say that, I learn something new at every single gig. Whether it be about sound, reading the crowd, new equipment, etc. Learning how to not overthink, and just have fun!
You have to be willing to navigate so many things! Meeting new people, behind the decks and on the dance floor. Bringing your best self and your best set, but like anything else, sometimes you may fall short.
I have done shows and killed it! I’ve also been in situations where I wasn’t familiar with equipment or not properly prepared, and I couldn’t play. Those moments can be embarrassing and disheartening, but you have to push through! I have been blessed to play in a lot of different settings. From backyards to some of the hottest venues in the city! Every crowd is different. You have to be prepared for anything, and able to pivot and recover FAST! Lol

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m passionate about making people dance. I like to connect with people through music. From the babies to the well seasoned folks. Whether it’s through my sets or through my mixes that I have posted on SoundCloud. I love exploring different genres and meshing them together to create new and exciting sounds. My favorite selection of music to play is house and techno. I enjoy the high fives, and standing ovations at the end of my sets. It’s heartwarming! It lets me know the people not only enjoyed the music but it made them feel good. I aim to be my most genuine self when I get behind those decks. It’s therapy for me! I truly enjoy what I do, and I hope that my love for music and the energy I put behind it, is the very thing that sets me apart.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I believe people are always yearning for those fresh invigorating moments! I see more women behind the decks and behind the scenes creating and making their mark on the industry. I see more spaces and platforms being built that promote real dancing or more interactive music! We as people need to move our bodies and feel free. I think with the heaviness of all the things going on in the world there’s a level of detachment, and I see the art of music and dance being of more value and breaking that up in the next 5-10 years. I know people have concerns about things like AI but only people with a true passion for music, can provide those real feels and connections!
