Meet Jaeci Mccullum of Flower Power Productions

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaeci Mccullum

Hi Jaeci, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As cliche as it may sound, Djing changed my life. I’m so excited I was given this opportunity to share my story and reflect. I originally started as a Licensed Cosmetologist and Massage Therapist, and worked at a salon for 4 years. Although I was moving up in the company, I just wasn’t passionate. Fast forward to the summer of 2022, I wasn’t in a great spot and I felt like I had hit rock bottom. My father had just passed, I was struggling with alcohol, going through a hard breakup and I wasn’t doing great financially. I saw a local bar was hiring for Dj’s and I applied with absolutely no experience, just because it sounded fun and I’ve always loved music. I used to be on the AUX for parties in high school lol. I spent the next few months just messing around with equipment at the bar and picked it up pretty fast. I realized I had such a passion for the ability to set the party, being in front of a crowd, and getting people excited through music. I knew right away this is what I wanted to do with my life, but as I’m sure you can assume, it’s hard to make a living off of Djing. So I spent the next few months researching (Thank you Tiktok lol) the Dj industry until the idea of my business came to be. It felt like the universe was setting me up for success, and that’s when I made the scary decision to quit my job at the salon, to pursue Djing full time. After that, I went around to different organizations and offered to Dj their events for free until I was able to start profiting. From there, I knew I wanted to start doing weddings but I didn’t know where to begin. When something is meant to happen, the universe will always lead you. My step father connected me to his brother, who coincidentally had a Dj business in Saginaw, and he really helped to show me the ropes. I will forever be thankful to have met someone so willing to see me succeed. The first wedding I Dj’d, I was SOOO nervous, but the couple told me I did phenomenal. I was singing and dancing the entire drive home lol. From there, the bookings kept coming and I was booked just about every weekend this last fall. I had an incredible first year and I truly can’t believe how much I’ve grown. I can’t wait to see where I go from here.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I had to realize that this was not going to happen over night lol. Although things are going well, it’s a gradual process. I’ve really learned to just be thankful for the process and not rush growing. Every business grows at its own pace and I’m really comfortable with the rate of how I’m growing. It’s been so much fun and therapeutic to work on bettering my business.
Also, because I struggled with alcohol in the past, it was hard for me to be around it all of the time. Some days are harder than others, however I’ve been sober almost 2 years and have overall overcome that obstacle.

We’ve been impressed with Flower Power Productions, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am a woman owned and operated Dj business. I started in bars and now mainly do weddings, birthday parties and corporate events. I think being a woman sets me apart for obvious reasons, just because there aren’t a ton of women in this industry, but more importantly, it’s my passion for the job. I love it so much, it doesn’t feel like work. Music is the one thing that brings people together, for example, you can have two people in a room who don’t get along, both up dancing to the same song. I love being the reason for that, and I think it shows in my events. The entire branding of Flower Power Productions is Jaeci lol. It’s my colors, it’s bright, it’s about music, happiness, women’s empowerment with a little dash of silliness, which again is 100% me lol. I wanted my branding to feel warm and safe.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Fake it till you make it, I cannot stress that enough. In the times I felt like I didn’t know what I was doing, I am so thankful I pushed myself and jumped, because I truly wouldn’t be where I am today. You have to be a little irrational to be successful. I only live one time, so I might as well make the most of it while I’m here.
