Today we’d like to introduce you to Leona Ortiz.
Hi Leona, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I knew years ago I wanted to support those going through transformational times. Those that knew me, would tell me how great I would be as a birth doula. Which lead to completing a birth doula training. Immediately, I knew being apart of birth work and supporting families is where I belonged. So I went full force and started midwifery school to be a licensed midwife. Was brought on by two licensed professional midwives locally to work with while attending midwifery school. I work with doula clients when my schedule allows. As well as offer other services to the public. Today, I am a primary midwife under supervision, in my 3rd year of school & training. Apart of a local BIPOC doula group and collaborate with non profits to give back to families. Where recently a nonprofit donated postpartum supplies for our clients.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the biggest obstacle along the way is being newer to this area. Only being here for 3 years, trying to get our name in the community has been a challenge. Including the lack of funding for midwifery school. There is no federal funding, making midwifery school a huge out of pocket expense.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about OM Bebe Doula Services?
Currently, we work with clients within an hour of Lansing. Providing emotional and physical support to families. Initially we meet with families during pregnancy to build a personal relationship & their birth plan. Are present during the birth & give postpartum support. Being a Primary Student midwife, we are typically known for our midwifery work in the community. However, that has added value for clients to have informed choice discussions with us as their birth doula. As doulas only provide emotional, physical support & evidence based resources to clients. We are proud to offer placental services to the public for those interested in encapsulation, salves, tinctures, prints & keepsakes.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
My mom deserves many thanks! As she has been the biggest cheerleader from the beginning. Also have to give credit to the preceptors that brought me on as an early midwifery student. Sandra McCurdy and Rebecca Burkett. They have taught me so much on this journey. I’am so thankful to learn and work with each of them.
