Daily Inspiration: Meet Gwen Katherine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gwen Katherine

Hi Gwen, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I began writing music when I was a teenager, primarily as a way to cope with anxiety and depression. It took a long time to understand and accept that I was trans. It wasn’t until 2020 that I really started to embrace it and it inspired me to write a lot of music about that process of self acceptance. I started my current music project under the name “Hey Look Listen” in 2024 and released my first song for it in August.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not. Fear and self doubt were huge obstacles I had to face head on, both with music and transitioning. It’s still a work in progress. I taught myself how to play instruments and record music; that in itself was a long process.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I write, perform and record my own songs under the name “Hey Look Listen”. I play multiple instruments and everything on the recordings is me other than the drumming. I also create videos to accompany the music and make some of the album cover artwork. My music style is typically referred to as indie rock, though it is a mix of a lot things – punk, alt rock, pop and even folk. As a trans person I feel I have a unique perspective that is worth sharing, especially for other queer people who feel misunderstood and unseen.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
How to focus less on a negative situation and put your attention towards a positive direction, as well as being open to working on your internal problems instead of being distracted by external pursuits.
