Exploring Life & Business with Kelli Walker of Whimsy Boudoir

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelli Walker

Hi Kelli, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I originally started my photography career as a newborn and family photographer. At the time, I was brand new to the world of photography, and with three daughters of my own, it felt like the natural path. I figured capturing sweet moments of newborns and documenting the love between families was what I wanted to do. For about a year, I was convinced this was it. I loved getting to hold those tiny babies, capturing every little detail—their tiny fingers, squishy cheeks—and witnessing the connection between families. But something always felt a little off, like a piece of me wasn’t being fully expressed through the images I was creating. It was fulfilling, but I sensed there was something more I was meant to do.

Then, out of nowhere, an opportunity came up that changed everything. I was invited to attend a boudoir content day. It’s basically a day where photographers gather to learn all the ins and outs of boudoir—posing, lighting, the whole vibe. I didn’t know what to expect, but I figured why not? The moment I stepped into that space and started shooting, something clicked. It was more than just photography; it was about empowerment. I wanted to create a space where not only women but everyBODY could feel confident, sexy, and completely unapologetic in who they are.

The funny thing is, I’ve always struggled with my own body image. For most of my life, I hid behind dark clothes, avoided large groups, and felt terrified to fully be myself. But working with my boudoir clients over the years has transformed that for me. Seeing them embrace their bodies, celebrate their individuality, and step into their power has helped me come into my own self-love. It’s been a healing journey for me too—one that I’m incredibly grateful for.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Listen, I’m going to be brutally honest with you. The world we live in today doesn’t exactly want us to have our own mind, especially when it comes to loving ourselves right now, in this moment. If they did, we wouldn’t be bombarded with endless commercials, ads, and influencers trying to sell us on how to “improve” ourselves. We wouldn’t see wrinkle creams, weight-loss surgeries, body-slimming tricks, or the endless stream of “fix yourself” solutions. It’s like everywhere you turn, someone is telling you that the way you are isn’t good enough.

And let’s not even get started on social media. Social media has made it nearly impossible for boudoir photographers to get the word out about their businesses. Mine included. I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve been restricted, put on “time out,” or shadow banned—basically just straight-up censored for sharing the art I create. The algorithm doesn’t show my content, and I get judged by the very platforms that are supposed to give us a voice. Meanwhile, major corporations, backed by ridiculous marketing budgets, shove content in our faces that makes us feel like we need to change. It’s an illusion, designed to make us chase this ideal of “perfection” that’s always out of reach.

What really frustrates me is that I can’t post a photo of a beautiful, curvy woman without being flagged because apparently, her body doesn’t meet some arbitrary “community standards.” Yet, brands like Victoria’s Secret, or other lingerie giants, have no problem posting their content—often objectifying women—without any fear of restrictions or repercussions. Their multi-million dollar ad campaigns are deemed acceptable, but my message of body positivity and self-love? Too controversial.

It’s maddening that some people still view boudoir as something inappropriate, or worse, as some form of “porn.” The truth is, what I do is far from that. I’m not exploiting anyone. What I’m doing is empowering people—giving them the space and the freedom to embrace exactly who they are without shame. Boudoir is about self-expression, confidence, and breaking free from this constant pressure to change. It’s about rejecting the idea that we have to fit into some box to be beautiful or worthy of love.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
At Whimsy Boudoir, I’m all about celebrating *you* in the most authentic, fun, and empowering way possible! I specialize in boudoir & Nude photography, which, let’s be honest, is so much more than just pretty pictures in cute lingerie. It’s about embracing your inner badass, whether you’re rocking curves, edges, or something in between. What sets me apart is that I’m not just here to snap photos; I’m here to create an experience where you feel like the absolute star that you are!

I’ve poured my heart into making Whimsy Boudoir a place where everyone—yes, everyBODY—is celebrated exactly as they are. My new studio has this dark, moody, academia vibe that makes you feel like you’re walking into a cool, edgy dream. And I’ll be your personal boudoir posing guru, making sure you feel comfortable, confident, and, honestly, like a total queen (or king!).

One thing I’m super proud of brand-wise? I’m not about perfection. I’m about authenticity. I want everyone who steps into my studio to walk out feeling like the best version of themselves—not the one society tells you to be, but *you* in all your glory.

So, if you’re ready for an experience that’s all about self-love, empowerment, and a little bit of saucy mystery, you’ve come to the right place! From couples boudoir to solo sessions, I’ve got all the vibes covered. Plus, I offer killer payment plans, so there’s no stress in making it happen. Let’s celebrate the magic that is *you*!

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I’ve learned along this crazy, amazing journey? That self-love isn’t a destination—it’s a process. And, honestly, it’s one we all deserve to go through. I used to think I had to have it all figured out, like one day I’d just wake up and *bam*, I’d magically love every part of myself. Spoiler alert: it doesn’t work that way!

Working with so many incredible clients has taught me that we’re all on our own unique paths when it comes to loving who we are. Every shoot, every moment, I’m reminded that confidence comes in waves—and that’s okay. What matters is how we embrace those moments of vulnerability and turn them into strength.

Another huge lesson? The power of showing up as *yourself*. In my business and in life, I’ve learned that people connect with you when you’re real—messy hair, imperfections, quirks, and all. When I started showing up authentically, my business flourished in ways I never expected. It’s been a wild ride, but the biggest takeaway is that we’re all worthy of celebrating exactly as we are, no filters required!
