Rising Stars: Meet James “Chapo” Thompson

Today we’d like to introduce you to James “Chapo” Thompson

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started shooting photography, for what is hard to believe, 5 years now. It began as a purpose fulfillment and turned into an obligation to capture and record art and current events in their most natural form.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s never a smooth road. Anyone who agrees to this answer was spoonfed and enabled success, and even then comes with their own hardships and trials. There will always be constant roadblocks and stoppages that you cannot control, but what you can control is yourself. Your attitude and outlook is everything and that is what differentiates people from being able to meet new people or be stuck in their own self. I had to figure that myself to be able to grow and experience change.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I like to think I’m known for gritty imagery and contrasting color but hope that my personality and experience working with me shines through most of all. Photography being my strong suit, it’s more than just clicking buttons. It’s networking and making clients and collaborators confident that you’re fit for their bill. Reassuring and providing confidence as well as portraying an accurate visual representation of these individuals or subjects is where I like to focus my attention .

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Attitude. I think working with people who have drive and initiative far outshine any opportunity you hope is gifted or guaranteed. Nothing is promised in life so working with select peers that also share your dream and passion is where I find the most important moments and memories are made.
