Conversations with One Single Rose®

Today we’d like to introduce you to One Single Rose®

One Single Rose®, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I penned my first poem in the 2nd grade for a poetry contest and won. In the 4th grade I wrote a scathing letter to a teacher’s aide letting her know exactly how I felt about her imposing her religious views on me. I still cringe when I think back on the punishment my mom passed down after she read the letter, but from that letter mom knew that I was a budding writer who’d take mess from no one. Fast forward many decades…here you’ll find One Single Rose®, author of three self-published poetry collections a singer/songwriter and playwright who performs wherever her words are welcomed. The word has taken and is taking me on amazing performance journeys worldwide as One Single Rose® (the nice poet), Pearl (the naughty poet) and Queen Rose (the house music poet).

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I was very shy when my poetic journey began. Finding my voice wasn’t easy. As an author, it was tough attempting to sell poetry that I hadn’t memorized to people who preferred to enjoy the word audibly. I stepped into the world of spoken word under protest, but do not regret the 1 1/2 year struggle that got me there. As soon as I stepped out with faith to share pieces on me on stage, it’s as if the world opened and I’ve been following the word as it leads ever since. They haven’t steered me wrong yet.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a poetry author pushed into becoming a spoken word artist under protest. I wouldn’t change the process that got me here as we sometimes have to get uncomfortable to settle comfortably on the paths paved for our lives. I’m proud that I didn’t allow fear of public speaking stand in my way and that I overcame the obstacle that held me back from doing so–myself! As a result of finding my voice, I have experienced a few “firsts” following the word as it leads–the first poet filmed in Motown’s infamous Studio A, first Detroit Black Music Spoken Word Award recipient and the first poet published under the Broadside-Lotus Press merger (two of the oldest African-American presses in the United States). I bring every form of art that I employ whenever I take the stage. As a singer/songwriter, I infuse song into poetry performances and theatrical events providing more than one artistic genre on every stage I’m blessed to share pieces of me.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Stepping out on faith has been good luck providing opportunities for me to share the power of the word wherever they’re welcomed. Had I not been pushed into memorizing the poems I’d penned, I can’t say where I’d be professionally or artistically. Everything happens for a reason in its time, when it’s time.
