Community Highlights: Meet Kimara Verret of FilthyFadeGang

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimara Verret

Hi Kimara, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I initially knew absolutely nothing about the hair/barber industry. The introduction to my career was going to barbering school. Fast-forward to 6 years later, I now have my own studio and have developed experience on how to properly manage salon suites. During that time, I have partnered with well known brands such as MY SALON Suites, Marlo Beauty Supplies, and JRL.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road to success has been anything but smooth. It’s true when they say that entrepreneurship is a spiritual journey, because you never truly know what’s next. It can be difficult to rely on faith to lead you in the right direction. When I relocated from Miami to Detroit. This presented several challenges. For example, making the decision to leave the barbershop environment to transition into my own space. This required me to start over and rebuild clientele in a new city. After all, I had only maintained my newest clients for 1 year and a half. I had no idea that my fairly new clientele would follow me. At the time, it just felt right. I had to trust myself and take a leap of faith.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
FilthyFadeGang is a hair grooming studio for men located in downtown Ferndale, Michigan. It’s a safe space owned and operated by a black woman. Men can find comfort in being free to be themselves while being taken care of. I specialize in fading and taking ample time to accomplish exceptional results. My professionalism sets me apart from other barbers, as I utilize a system that allows clients to feel valued and satisfied after every service. For those that cannot afford my premium prices weekly, they can still visit me for special occasions to pamper themselves. Most of my clients are entrepreneurs or work in the professional sports industry, so they choose to invest in self-care on a regular basis. I am very proud that my brand is well respected by the community. I’m honored that my business is perceived as a high-end hair studio. I truly could not have asked for more.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I am currently shadowing a MY SALON Suite owner as a mentee. My mentor owns and operates over 11 locations throughout the metro Detroit area. My goal in the next 3-5 years is to transition into the salon suite business as an owner. I aspire to help individuals establish their own business because there is so much more to just simply renting a salon suite. Most people do not seize the opportunity to scale their business by using social media to create a personal brand.
