Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert O’banner
Hi Robert, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Even though I’ve always been creative, it’s not until recent years where the momentum has built up to where it is today. I’m originally from Compton, CA, and I’ve been here in Detroit, MI since 2018, where I’ve found a community of really talented and supportive folk. My art, influenced by the cartoons I grew up watching, the dope graffiti of the early 90’s and this hyper perceptive, but also wandering, mind of mine, has been finding its way into galleries, shops and homes throughout the region and beyond. I’m glad people are liking what they see! I’d be making it anyway, but having people appreciate the art means a lot.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Shouts out to the artist who’ve had a smooth road to the successes they’ve achieved. I mean, can it be smooth for anyone? I think it’s just a matter of perseverance and vulnerability. There’s so much deep emotion that goes into some of my stuff and to show it to folks is hard. Getting over parting with my art was a big deal. I’ve had shows fall through due to personal issues with the people in charge of putting my work out there. Some of those lost opportunities hurt, but they don’t stop the creativity that has to get out. I’ve had a bunch of hardships, but honestly, it’s been worth it for the incredible position I’ve been put in! I’ve been able to express myself in a way some can only dream of, and I’ve been able to pull folks up and have an impact. The platform is small, but there’s room for others, just as others have made space for me. For every L i’ve taken, helping someone get a W evens the scales for me. I’m grateful.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I paint the things I feel, think and see, with a bit of obfuscation. I work mostly in acrylics and spray paint. I’d say I’m known for telling stories using organic shapes and having fun while doing it. I love texture and colors. I’m most proud of just showing the art to be honest. It was a huge step and I’m proud of myself for taking it. I think staying true to my vision sets me apart from the crowd. Even if the audience won’t get it, it’s authentically me and that is what’s most important when you’re talking creativity.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
If being an artist is your dream, first and foremost, make art! Learn how to take criticism in a way that doesn’t derail or discourage you. And keep moving forward. Starting out, I wish someone would have told me how busy I’d be. Time management is so important. Sometimes you get so busy doing all the things surrounding the business of art that you forget to make realistic time for making art. Having a solid schedule, setting a couple hours aside during your busy week to make art is the best thing you can do for yourself.
