Today we’d like to introduce you to Dominique Thomas
Hi Dominique, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Dominique Thomas, and I am a self-published urban fiction author. My passion for writing began at age fifteen when I wrote my first book. Unfortunately, I lost that manuscript because I didn’t have a backup. Fast forward to 2014—I submitted my work to a publisher, received a contract, and officially began my writing career. Since then, I have dedicated myself to writing, self-publishing over fifteen best-selling novels on Amazon. My books are also available on platforms like Barnes & Noble and can be found in many libraries nationwide. Whenever possible, I attend book events across the country to connect with readers.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. As a self-published author, every responsibility falls on you—from covering the costs of book covers and editors to promoting your work. It’s a lot to manage, and you have to stay self-motivated to avoid feeling defeated.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As an author, I see myself as a true creative. I’m deeply connected to my writing and sensitive about the stories I tell. I specialize in urban fiction, with a reputation for crafting compelling series, especially about sisterhood, like The Matin Series and The Promise Series. I also began a mafia series last year called The Toussaint Mafia Series and have tackled serious topics in novels like Bleeding Love, which addresses domestic violence, and Pray You Catch Me, focused on mental health.
Additionally, I co-wrote a successful Black biker series called The Burner Boyz with the talented author Charae Lewis. Though I love all my books, Bleeding Love holds a special place in my heart because of its meaningful topic. What sets me apart as an author is that I write for myself—I follow my inspiration. If I feel like writing a mystery urban novel, I’ll do it, as I did with Blow Your Mind. While I once wrote to keep up with trends, I’ve since evolved, embracing stories and characters that speak to me. Writing has enriched my life with incredible readers and stories that I am grateful to share.
What matters most to you? Why?
Writing a good story and connecting with my readers are at the heart of my work. I often think about how I want my writing career to be remembered—a catalog of timeless stories that will continue to resonate. Creating a movie or series from my work would be the ultimate achievement, but my primary goal is to tell stories about African American lives in a way that readers can truly relate to. I always incorporate God into my stories, regardless of the storyline, and I hope that each reader takes something meaningful from my work when they finish reading.
