Today we’d like to introduce you to Kamal Smith
Hi Kamal, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My acting journey started in 2005 after my singing career never took off. I tried out for a play and performed in a small black box theater and was hooked. I did plays from 2005 – 2016. In 2010 after one of my plays, I was approached to write and direct my first film’Loud Pack’. I got addicted to film and never looked back. I started with my own sitcom “Because We’re Men’ that aired on TV20 for two seasons and that was the start of Kamal Smith Films!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I wouldn’t say the road was hard or easy. I think my strong belief in God paved the way. If I had to describe my road in a word it would be PATIENCE. When you believe so much in a dream, you’re going to have your ups and downs. That being said, sure I was broke at one point of time, I got evicted, and even had my car repossessed. But there was never a situation where I stopped believing in self. Just had to stay patient and trust.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As a filmmaker, I write, direct, act and produce. I wouldn’t say I specialize or prefer one more than the other. All categories give me their own thrill. I’ve accomplished many things over the years but probably what I am proud of the most is being able to mentor so many people and see others live their dreams.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I’m a music kind of guy. Listening to music for me is not only therapeutic but it’s motivating.
