Daily Inspiration: Meet Nyah Pierson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nyah Pierson

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Raised throughout Metro Detroit, I grew up like many artists in the church to my minister father, and mother. My parents knew that music was my calling before I could talk, so they planned for me to study music to pay for college. This resulted in me training for 5+ years in private vocal lessons and then chorally with a youth development organization – Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit throughout high school. Despite all signs leading me towards studying music post-high school, I still hadn’t quite wrapped my head around this idea due to fear of failing and the immense amount of young people in the world that I knew would also be pursuing music as a career field for themselves. It was all a little overwhelming to think about, especially considering my background was in theatre – musical theatre, so my goal was to be on Broadway. After studying theatrical acting & pursuing an acting career with local nonprofit theaters, I realized the amount of time and sacrifice required for young actors was not something I was willing to commit to. However, I was willing to commit to the work ethic and effort needed for a musical artist. This was a direct result of a personal challenge that I committed myself to – put out an EP of my work and see where it took me. The project started as a means to prove to myself that I could write music and even make a body of work to begin with. I found a local studio and producer then got to work. After the first night of recording in the studio, something shifted within me like this was where I was always supposed to be, and thus – V Da Queen was born.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Over the last few years, the biggest challenge has been creating my unique path along this journey. There is no guidebook for how to enter the industry or for how to push yourself to be consistent in keeping yourself going on this journey. This can especially be a challenge when all signs feel like they are pointing towards no hope. There was a time when I didn’t have a consistent day job and struggling to pay my day-to-day bills was stressful. I found myself finding ways to keep pushing myself on the cheaper route. I optimized my time by studying artists more closely for sounds I liked, producers I admired, and eras of music that I had long forgotten about. Each song I analyzed helped me start writing songs for other artists and understanding various musicians’ individual sounds and song structures. This process ultimately led me to create my latest release, ‘Get Up’. It also allowed me to formalize what I wanted to aspire to & put into motion what route I wanted to take to become a top songwriter in the industry. Although I am still figuring out the daily process of working a 9-5 and then working the job of an artist after hours, the need to keep pushing forward has only shown brighter as a result of those days that I didn’t have the funds, didn’t have resources, or the full artistic team that I was needing. Now I have a group of artistic friends that are helping me find my sound as an artist and as a writer. I now have a stable job and the extra funds I have go right back into my music. My desire to do this full-time outweighs any fears of otherwise not pursuing my dreams at all.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Before starting my current EP, I participated in new artist development programs and a songwriting boot camp with artists/instructors like Grammy-winning Vocal Coach Antea Birchett and Grammy-winning Berklee professor Keli Nicole Price. Although that first EP I started was never released, my first single ‘Love Myself’ from that project was and received very positive feedback. In promoting it, I realized my passion lies in performance and writing which has led me to shift my focus to write music for artists in the industry. Songwriting has become my newest superpower and although I don’t aspire to be the biggest pop artist in history – I’d love to write music for those artists. Currently, you can find me in the studio recording my latest project which I will be releasing in early spring 2025. My first single off this project, ‘Get Up’, is already out for all to enjoy in the meantime.
I have to say my debut EP is what I am most proud of. Using musical artists like Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, and Beyoncé – who I grew up listening to as inspiration, I wrote songs that hit across various genres to showcase my gifts as a vocalist but also as a songwriter. I aspire to create an immersive listening experience for my audience on any track I am a part of. In particular, for this EP, I hope to have my audience experience the highs and lows of having an unrequited love and how to find yourself after that relationship. I think the EP does a great job of going through all the emotions one might feel and how it might feel to get into a new relationship that is healthier than the last. I really can’t wait for everyone to hear it.
