Meet Catie Eovaldi of Port Huron, Michigan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Catie Eovaldi

Hi Catie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I picked up a camera for the first time in 2012 during my senior year of high school. My best friend at the time needed senior portraits for our yearbook and couldn’t afford a professional. I had so much fun figuring out how to work my mom’s camera and how to pose her for the perfect yearbook image. I spent the next couple years pursuing photography as a hobby, but never made any move to make it a professional career until much later in life.

My father passed away during my freshmen year of college. I put the camera down, moved back home, and really tried to work through everything. It was a struggle. I made the decision to move to Michigan for a fresh start in 2017 and finish my bachelor’s degree after a couple years of struggling at home. My poor camera sat in my closet for years untouched. During this time I started dating my now-husband and I worked in insurance. I needed a creative outlet from the stress of the job and tried so many things outside of photography, but eventually I picked up the camera again. This time, I let it stick and decided to start a business on the side- which quickly grew. I made the switch from photographing seniors and families to engagements and weddings. My husband really encouraged me to go full-time with photography, so I left insurance for good in 2023. I haven’t looked back since!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There was a lot of fear leaving the comfort of my full-time career in insurance. I had a steady income and easily could have pursued the path of becoming an agent and owning my own agency, but it wasn’t what I really wanted. Once I moved past that fear and opened my business I really started thriving.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I travel around Michigan documenting couples and their wedding days, and I love it! As a wedding photographer, I have a front row seat to the best day of someone’s life and there’s truly no greater honor than being the one to capture it. I work with the sweetest couples and being able to be a part of their day is so special to me.

My approach on a wedding day is to capture the day as it unfolds and document it authentically while my clients live in the moment. Photos are a way we remember moments and stories. I want my clients to look at a photo and remember their feelings and the fun they had.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Trust is a quality that has been the most important to my success as a business owner. It can be a scary leap to place trust in someone you haven’t worked with before, but the couples that have placed their complete trust in me have been so happy.
