Today we’d like to introduce you to Gwen Thomas
Hi Gwen, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey to founding Fresh Perspectives Seminars started after a long and diverse career across several industries. I had the opportunity to work in civil rights, the securities industry, broadcast media, and brand marketing in beverage, healthcare and beauty, sports, entertainment, and education. I built my own entertainment marketing business, working with some of the biggest brands—Proctor & Gamble, General Motors, Coca-Cola, and many others—while managing large-scale events and collaborating with renowned artists jazz and hip-hop artists.
But in 2012, after years of success in marketing and entertainment, I realized I wanted to shift my focus to something more impactful. I began to notice a growing problem—families, particularly in marginalized communities, were struggling to send their kids to college without drowning in student debt. I saw firsthand the financial burden student loans placed on young people’s futures, and it became clear to me that I needed to help, especially since I was successful in helping my son brand himself to win $500,000.00 in scholarships that paid for his undergraduate, masters degrees and study abroad to 30 countries.
So, I took a six-year break from the marketing world to focus on a new mission. I founded Fresh Perspectives Seminars, a non-profit aimed at equipping young people with the knowledge and resources they need to access higher education without the heavy financial burden. I wanted to show families that there were real options to reduce college debt and help their children succeed.
Since starting Fresh Perspectives, I’ve worked with students to secure over $30 million in scholarships, and I’ve helped many of them study abroad in over 100 countries, making them globally competitive and study sustainable careers. I’ve guided countless families through the complicated college preparation process, giving them the tools they need to reduce student debt and build skills for their future careers. Each year, we host more than 1,000 students and work hard to measure our impact on their educational success.
Looking back, I’m proud of how far we’ve come. Fresh Perspectives Seminars is not just about college readiness—it’s about creating real, life-changing opportunities for students and families who may have felt those doors were closed to them. We’re helping young people not only dream but pursue those dreams in ways that set them up for long-term success.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Our biggest challenge as an organization is securing financial support. Our work relies on corporate sponsorships, private donations, corporate, institution and individual sales from my book, “The Parents Smart Guide to Sending Your Kids to College without Going Broke” and contracts with school districts. Despite our proven track record and the positive outcomes we deliver, we’ve encountered resistance from one of the largest school districts in the very community we serve. Many of the school district’s systems are broken. While we offer scaled pricing to accommodate various budgets, the district opted to pilot a program with a preferred vendor whose credentials don’t match ours but came in with a lower price. Unfortunately, after we were asked to submit our proprietary information, we were bypassed in favor of this lesser-qualified option.
One of the more persistent obstacles we face is the lack of understanding from some colleges and institutions about the financial resources students need not only to get into college but to graduate successfully. Too often, colleges are focused on admissions without placing enough emphasis on supporting students through matriculation, ensuring they have the resources to persist and complete their degrees. Additionally, many institutions continue to steer students toward antiquated majors that offer little to no job prospects in today’s workforce, which sets these students up for debt without the security of gainful employment.
Another significant challenge lies in communicating the value of our work to parents. Many parents don’t fully grasp the importance of investing in college preparation. They often don’t realize that school counselors are overburdened, typically responsible for hundreds of students, which leaves little time for the personalized guidance that can make a real difference. A small investment in college preparation now can save families tens of thousands of dollars in the future. With student debt reaching record levels, we are working tirelessly to prevent the financial burden from crushing the next generation.
Our programs have proven results, not just in Michigan but globally. We offer a comprehensive approach to college and career readiness that goes beyond the surface level, preparing students to thrive academically and professionally. We are committed to stopping the financial bleeding families experience, helping them navigate the complex college process and secure scholarships and opportunities they might otherwise miss. But to continue doing this critical work, we need stronger financial backing and a broader understanding of the value we bring.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Our non-profit is dedicated to guiding students toward sustainable, 21st-century career pathways that empower them to earn higher than just a standard wage. We provide personalized support to ensure students and their families fully understand the financial literacy necessary to pay for and finance college. Our ultimate goal is to help students attend college free of debt.
Some school districts offer Promise Partnerships, allowing students with a minimum GPA of 3.0 to attend four-year colleges tuition-free. However, many students fall short of this benchmark and need targeted assistance in finding scholarships or programs to cover their tuition. For those aspiring to attend out-of-state colleges, financial challenges become even greater, and we are committed to helping them overcome those barriers.
Our approach extends beyond traditional college pathways, as we also guide students toward skilled trades and digital certification programs. These options often provide free certifications, equipping students with high-demand skills that lead to well-paying and secure careers. We are focused on opening every possible avenue to financial stability, preparing students not just for college, but for long-term success.
What truly sets our work apart is how my book comes to life through direct engagement with students. We offer one-on-one coaching sessions, group seminars for schools and nonprofits, and workshops for parents that teach students how to write winning scholarships competitively. By working with students hands-on, we empower them to secure the financial resources they need to pursue their dreams and build a financially sound future.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success in the work we do through our non-profit is ultimately measured by the transformation we see in students’ lives. It begins with students who, through our guidance, are able to fully understand and take control of their college preparation journey. These students not only gain acceptance into the schools of their choice, but they do so with a solid financial plan in place, free from the crippling burden of student debt. They’ve learned how to research and secure scholarships, apply for grants, and understand the best options for financing their education. Success means seeing these students graduate not just with a degree, but with financial independence and the ability to start their careers without the shadow of debt hanging over them.
Beyond college readiness, success also means students entering high-demand, well-paying careers that set them up for long-term financial security. Whether they choose traditional four-year institutions, skilled trades, or digital certifications, we ensure that students are equipped with the tools they need to succeed in the 21st-century workforce. We see success when students leverage their skills and credentials to earn above-standard wages, breaking the cycle of low-income stagnation that too often limits opportunities in underrepresented communities. Our coaching and mentorship open doors not just to education but to careers that allow students to build wealth and stability for themselves and their families.
Success is also reflected in the families and communities we serve. When parents become fully engaged in the college preparation process, they gain peace of mind knowing they’ve helped their children navigate the complexities of higher education financing. Our work with families reduces the fear of overwhelming debt and empowers parents to invest in their children’s future with confidence. Additionally, the broader community benefits as these students and families become examples of what’s possible when the right resources and guidance are in place. This ripple effect of success—across individuals, families, and communities—is the true measure of our impact.
