Check Out Mallory Hoggard’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mallory Hoggard

Hi Mallory, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story is different than most entrepreneurs. I didn’t know I wanted to be an Interior Designer, let alone a business owner. Now that I’m here, it makes perfect sense but my younger self didn’t realize it was a realistic option. I explored other careers until I had gathered enough creative credits that the choice became clear.

After graduating college during a recession (2007), jobs we sparse. Although I landed a job at a furniture store (in Birmingham, MI) I ultimately decided to relocate after a year. I packed my car and drove to Houston, TX to explore other design avenues.

During my 5 years in Texas I worked as a design assistant as well as a sales person at the Houston Design Center. This experience is irreplicable. I grew immensely as a professional and a designer during this time. Houston wasn’t my “forever home”.

Michigan brought me a few more years of work for other designers until my husband, Zach, and I started a family. It was time to take control of my schedule and creative instinct. Mallory Hoggard Interiors was born in 2014 while we were expecting our first of three daughters. Every few years it evolved into a slightly larger space, a few employees and a growing clientele.

Building my experiences took time and determination. I find myself seeking for the next opportunity to take another leap toward grown.

Here I am in 2024 with my own 3000 sq. ft. studio, a few employees, and a loyal clientele.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No. Not at all! There were almost zero jobs available at my time of college graduation. I didn’t land my dream job until I created the position for myself. There were people who told me to get a “regular” job because it would be more reliable and predictable. In fact, I had job offers for three “regular” jobs at one point. I was SO CLOSE to changing my career path at that time.

I am profoundly grateful to my younger self for courageously moving forward, for creating my own path, and for following my own voice.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I view interior design as instinctual. Yes, there are design principles, building codes, fiber contents, fire ratings etc. But the ability to pay attention to all of these important details while also developing a layered, well planned, “collected over time” aesthetic takes instinct.

I specialize in remodels, new build, home furnishings, and window treatments. I get involved in the design process when the architectural plans are drawn up. The client and I discuss framing changes, electrical plans, plumbing, cabinetry designs, flooring materials, tile, paint, trim, lighting, hardware, furniture, decor…… If it is going into the home, we discuss it. Top to bottom.

A common concern is durability of materials. I have three kids, a dog, and an outdoorsy husband. We live in our house. We use everything. It’s equally as important to me, as it is the homeowner, that their selections hold up. I genuinely enjoy being that source to show them durable options while also creating the look and feel that they crave.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
I have an extremely supportive husband to start. He has always let my career choices be mine. That goes a long way for an individual’s confidence.

I have two sisters, one of whom owns her own business as well. She is also a huge cheerleader of mine. We have plenty of discussions about our businesses and she is always there with firm (but appreciated) guidance. My family overall has advocated for me, supported my journey, and stood by side as my creative dreams came to fruition.
