Conversations with Lindsay Skowronek

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsay Skowronek

Lindsay, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Two words: Happy Halloween! I am inspired by anything creepy, gross, and all things unusual. (“I myself am, strange and unusual.”) Although I initially began doing Halloween inspired make-up looks, I soon found myself painting anything I could get my hands on. I gravitate towards creating “spooky” art that most could find disturbing, hence why I named my business, The Uglies. What started off as doing make-up looks in my room suddenly became my motivation to go to school for Special Effects. I graduated from Multimedia Makeup Academy and shortly after started an internship at one of Michigan’s best haunted attractions, Erebus, where I got to assist with painting a variety of scary sets. Once the haunt season was over, I set out to focus on my small business and challenged myself to see what I could produce! I just finished my first art expo and cannot wait to keep creating and see where I end up. Halloweentown, perhaps?

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
One of the biggest challenges I have as an artist is to give myself grace. I set out to try new things and explore all realms of creating, but I have to remind myself that it’s okay to not be great at something right away! In the words of the legendary Bob Ross, “as long as you’re learning, you’re not failing.”

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in painting, whether it’s faces, coasters, skateboards, or giant skeleton heads, I’ll take a brush to any canvas I find available! I’ve dabbled in set design, sculpting, special effects, prints, and films, but my love for painting will always take precedence. Although I enjoy concocting my own scary items, I love to take requests and do custom work as well.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters to me is trying new things and growing along the way, but most importantly, always have fun! I know I have a certain audience my art caters to and not everyone is going to love what I create. But first and foremost, I have to enjoy what I’m doing. As long as you be yourself the right people will stand beside you.
