Daily Inspiration: Meet Dj Pressure

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dj Pressure

Hi DJ, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
With nothing to do during Covid-19 lockdown, my friend and I would play around on a baby deck, even went as far as hosting our own shindigs to show our close friends our acquared skills! After the lockdown, we’ve individually been able to book shows and get recognized as DJs in the Metro detroit area. As a Nigerian-America living in the US, I’ve always had the ‘afrobeat’ music to lean on, to keep be grounded and close to home. Being able to express and identify culture through nmusic has been a blessing for me. I’ve been able to play shows like JerkxJollof, 513Vybes (Cinncinati), ParkHouse, at locations like Big Pink, Delux and Spotlite to name a few. Mixing sounds from Nigeria to South Africa and bringing it back to the US!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’tbeen smooth. Coming into the industry green and wide eyed, a lot of things go over your head when you’re still finding your footing. Collaborating with other people isn’t always the easiest. Knowing the right people to have around myself and my brand has been something interesting to figure out to say the least. I think another issue is venues not trusting new faces to hold it down. Working with the same wo=folx definitely builds community etc. but it stunts the growth when opportunities are passed to people that have been around for years.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am an artsit first, I specialise in singing and songwriting. I am known more as a DJ. I believe its until I have more of my own music and art out that the understanding of what sets me apart will be clear to see.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I’m an only child, which seems to surprise most people a lot.
