Community Highlights: Meet Latoya Thompson of Opulence Wines

Today we’d like to introduce you to Latoya Thompson

Hi LaToya , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey into the wine industry began unexpectedly while I was living in Miami, finishing my doctorate in Sport Physical Therapy. At that time, I discovered my passion for wine, which has since become an integral part of my life. I’ve always believed that wine is the “great connector,” allowing people from all walks of life to share experiences over a great glass of wine.

It was through my professional networking in the sports world that I began to explore wine more deeply. With my scientific background, I became captivated by the intricate journey from grape to glass. I marveled at how a single grape could evolve so differently depending on the year, its maturation, and where it was grown. The nuances were fascinating to me, and I couldn’t help but dive deeper into understanding those complexities.

However, it didn’t take long for me to notice the lack of representation in the wine industry—people who looked like me weren’t often leading the way. Thankfully, there are trailblazers who have carved out paths that have made it possible for me to be where I am today, and I’m deeply grateful to them. My goal is to contribute to this growing community and be a part of its future, particularly in expanding representation.

Before wine became a major part of my life, my journey started in the world of physical therapy. As a young athlete, I suffered an injury that required extensive physical therapy, and that experience sparked my interest in the field. I went on to earn my doctorate in physical therapy, focusing on sport and orthopedic injuries. Today, I work for a local hospital system and also run my own company, Elite Rehab and Fitness, where I consult on athletic performance and rehabilitation. This balance of helping athletes and nurturing my passion for wine has created a unique path, and I am excited to see where it leads next.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My path in both wine and sports physical therapy has not been an easy road. In both industries, I have struggled with access. Although there are many clinics and several wines, being a black woman in both areas has been difficult. There are not many young black women that work with professional athletes and I am fortunate and grateful that my expertise has lead to the development of several stellar athletes. In wine, we deal with a 3 tier system for distribution. I struggled to find a distributor initially. Now, staying in demand by buyers is necessary in a growing field of new wine brands.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Opulence Wines was born from my passion for premium wine and cultivated by a taste for sumptuous living. Opulence Wines was founded with a vision to create a space where exceptional wine, education, and the arts come together in harmony. For me, wine tasting and drinking should be more than just a pastime—it should be an immersive experience, shaped by individuality and infused with an appreciation for the finer things in life.

Wine has a unique ability to transport you through your senses, guiding you to the lush valleys of Napa or the legendary terroirs of Bordeaux, France, all through the magic of taste. As a working mom, wife, and entrepreneur, I understand how hectic life can be, which is why I believe in the importance of elevated self-care. For me, that means enjoying a rich glass of Cabernet, accompanied by visually stimulating art and soul-enriching music. At Opulence Wines, luxury is more than a product—it’s an experience. We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I am a firm believer in taking calculated risks. The one thing I know about the human body is that some stress is necessary for growth, it makes us stronger. Whether it was diving into the world of physical therapy or venturing into the wine industry, I have realized that some of my greatest rewards came from the moments that I was most unsure about. Success, in my opinion, is as much about mindset as it is about action-Mind over Matter. I truly believe that with right mindset, the right people around you and mentorship, you can overcome the toughest challenges and turn them into opportunities. Through every triumph and every setback, God has been my constant guide. My faith grounds me, providing clarity in moments of uncertainty and strength when I need it the most. Every risk that I have ever taken has been rooted in my belief that He has a plan for me, even if the path isn’t always clear. Whether I’m guiding athletes to their full potential or creating spaces for wine lovers to connect I know and trust that I’m being lead in and towards my purpose. My biggest risks was starting my wine company. From producing the perfect blend to the many legalities that involve wine and spirits has definitely been a risk with a new challenge daily.
