Conversations with Brittany Murphy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Murphy

Hi Brittany, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
In 2016 I lost my father to cancer and grief soon increased the depression I had already been experiencing. That was when I had my first experience with a therapist. She was able to help me work through grief, depression and anxiety (which I learned I battled with my whole life). The freedom I’d gained from learning the why behind my behaviors and feelings was exhilarating and I knew in that moment I wanted to help others feel the same.

Fast forward to 2019 I was working at a financial institution and I recall often feeling unfulfilled. I knew I wanted to help people but wasn’t sure of how. Later that year my sister was in a bad car accident and shortly after I began having panic attacks almost daily. It felt impossible to work. I ended up taking a leave of absence, getting my mental health in order, and deciding not to return back to work. I enrolled in grad school to become a mental health counselor that December.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has been far from smooth but my faith has kept me going. I struggled with depression after having my first child, graduating from college, and entering the wonderful world of adulting. Battled with postpartum depression after my first two children. Had my third child while in grad school during a pandemic. Grieved the loss of three loved ones to cancer, all in the month of October, over a span of 3 years. All while navigating anxiety and severe negative self talk.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I absolutely love my job as a mental health counselor. I specialize in helping others navigate depression, anxiety, parenting, and life transitions. I love talking to people and listening to them tell their stories. I take pride in creating safe spaces for people to be themselves. I don’t take for granted the fact that people share their most intimate thoughts, feelings, and emotions with me.

I’m currently known for creating spaces for mothers to be themselves unapologetically. Allowing mothers to be proud of accomplishments, grieve certain losses that come with motherhood, and work through those tough moments. I’ve created two guided journals to assist with the process.

I’m most proud of my drive. Even on days when life is hectic I try my hardest to show up fully for others. I allow myself time away when needed. I’ve worked really hard to be less judgmental of myself and accept myself completely.

I believe that when I show up in rooms I am my most authentic self. I genuinely care about those in my presence and it shows. I’m naturally an empathetic listener. I know my genuineness shines through to every soul I meet. I was born to be the person I am today.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Selflessness. Lately I’ve reminding myself that the gifts I have are for the world. When I was in grad school one of my favorite instructors told us that once we decide to walk in our calling we are no longer allowed to show up halfway. She reminded us that people are depending on us to be our most authentic selves. That we have lives to save. Maybe to others this sounds intense but for me it was confirmation. I’m here in this world on an assignment to help is as many people as I can experience genuine care and learn to love themselves just as they are. This thought keeps me showing up to work especially on those difficult days.
