Hi Danielle, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Thank you for the opportunity to share my story. My journey into the field of clinical research and ultimately founding Black Women in Clinical Research (BWICR) has been both challenging and rewarding.
My interest in clinical research began during my undergraduate studies in biology. I was fascinated by the potential of research to improve health outcomes and the critical role clinical trials play in developing new treatments. After graduating, I started working as a clinical research coordinator, where I gained hands-on experience managing clinical trials and working closely with patients and healthcare professionals.
As I progressed in my career, I noticed a significant lack of diversity in the field, particularly among Black women. This lack of representation not only affected me personally but also had broader implications for the inclusivity and comprehensiveness of clinical research. Recognizing this gap, I felt a strong need to create a supportive community for Black women in this field.
In 2019, I founded Black Women in Clinical Research with the mission to educate, empower, and support Black women pursuing careers in clinical research. BWICR aims to address the unique challenges we face, provide mentorship, and create networking opportunities. Our community has grown rapidly, offering resources such as career development workshops, webinars, and a platform for members to share their experiences and insights.
Through BWICR, I’ve had the privilege of connecting with incredible women who are passionate about making a difference in clinical research. Seeing our members achieve their career goals and contribute to more inclusive research practices has been incredibly fulfilling.
Today, BWICR continues to advocate for diversity in clinical research, aiming to ensure that clinical trials are more representative of the populations they intend to serve. We strive to create pathways for the next generation of Black women to enter and excel in this field, ultimately contributing to better health outcomes for all.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Thank you for asking. My journey in founding Black Women in Clinical Research (BWICR) has been far from smooth, but each challenge has been a learning experience that has helped shape our mission and impact.
One of the primary struggles has been navigating an industry that often lacks diversity and inclusivity. Early in my career, I frequently found myself being the only Black woman in the room, which was both isolating and challenging. This underrepresentation highlighted the need for a supportive community, but establishing such a community was not easy.
Starting BWICR required overcoming significant barriers, including securing funding and resources. As a new organization, gaining visibility and credibility within the clinical research field took time and perseverance. There were moments of doubt and setbacks, particularly in trying to balance my professional responsibilities with building BWICR from the ground up.
Another challenge has been addressing the systemic issues that contribute to the lack of diversity in clinical research. This includes confronting implicit biases, advocating for inclusive hiring practices, and emphasizing the importance of diverse clinical trial participants. Educating stakeholders about these issues and driving meaningful change is an ongoing effort.
Despite these challenges, the support and enthusiasm from our community have been incredibly motivating. Every success story from our members, every new connection made, and every step towards a more inclusive research environment reaffirms our mission.
Moreover, the struggles have underscored the importance of resilience and collaboration. They’ve taught me the value of perseverance and the power of a united community working towards a common goal. Each obstacle has been a stepping stone, pushing us to innovate and adapt.
While the road has been bumpy, it has also been immensely rewarding. The impact BWICR has made so far, and the potential for even greater change, keeps me motivated and hopeful for the future. We’re committed to continuing this journey, addressing challenges head-on, and creating a more inclusive and equitable field of clinical research.

BWICR is an organization dedicated to supporting, educating, and empowering Black women pursuing careers in clinical research. Our mission is to address the unique challenges faced by Black women in this field and to promote diversity and inclusion within the industry.
At BWICR, we offer a range of resources and services to our members, including:
1. Mentorship Programs: We connect our members with experienced professionals who provide guidance, advice, and support to help them navigate their careers in clinical research.
2. Professional Development: We host webinars, workshops, and training sessions on various topics relevant to clinical research, career advancement, and personal growth.

Our members are our greatest asset, and their achievements reflect the strength and resilience of our collective efforts. Seeing our members thrive and make significant contributions to clinical research is incredibly rewarding.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I’ve learned along my journey with Black Women in Clinical Research (BWICR) is the power of community and collaboration. When I first started in this field, I often felt isolated due to the lack of diversity. It was easy to get discouraged and feel like I was navigating this path alone. However, as I connected with more Black women who shared similar experiences and challenges, I realized the immense strength and support that comes from being part of a community.
Building BWICR has reinforced the idea that we are stronger together. By creating a network where Black women in clinical research can connect, share resources, and support each other, we’ve been able to make a significant impact. This sense of community has not only provided practical benefits, such as mentorship and professional development, but it has also fostered a sense of belonging and empowerment among our members.
Additionally, collaboration has been key to our success. Partnering with other organizations, stakeholders, and advocates who share our vision of diversity and inclusion has amplified our efforts and expanded our reach. Working together towards a common goal has shown me that change is possible when we unite our efforts and leverage our collective strengths.
This journey has also taught me the importance of perseverance and resilience. Building something meaningful takes time, effort, and a willingness to overcome obstacles. There have been challenges along the way, but staying focused on our mission and being adaptable in the face of adversity has been crucial.
Ultimately, the most important lesson is that meaningful change is a collective effort. By fostering a supportive and collaborative community, we can overcome challenges, inspire each other, and drive progress towards a more inclusive and equitable field of clinical research.
