Rising Stars: Meet Kevin Pinkerton of Grand Rapids Mi.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Pinkerton

Hi Kevin, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I* Born and raised in New York City, I developed a passion for art early on, studying at the School of Visual Arts, the Arts Students League, and various classes at the City University of New York. My artistic journey began in 1980 as a painter, and in 1991, I took a significant step by moving to Taiwan with my wife. For nearly three decades, I lived and worked in Taiwan, exhibiting my art throughout Asia, as well as in New York, California, and Potsdam, Germany. In the summer of 2019, my wife and I returned to the United States, coinciding with our daughter’s wedding. We chose to settle in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where I have continued to paint and immerse myself in the local art scene. I maintain a small studio in Taiwan, allowing me to stay connected to my roots while creating art daily. Recently, I participated in the All Arts exhibition at the Van Andel Convention Center in Grand Rapids, on September 20th 21st 22nd where they had over 700 art works on display. I had two pieces on display, one of which sold. I find joy in painting and cherish the beautiful outdoors that Michigan has to offer.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Of course, it hasn’t been easy. Being a visual artist is incredibly challenging. While some artists are fortunate enough to sell their work, most need to have a job to support both their art and their families. As an artist, you face a lot of rejection because not every gallery or potential buyer will appreciate your work. It’s a struggle, but it takes time to build relationships with art galleries, museums, and the local art community. I would definitely say it hasn’t been a smooth road; there have been bumps along the way. However, if you have a passion for what you do, you will find a way to succeed.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a visual artist specializing in painting, using acrylics, charcoal, colored graphite, and oil crayons. I primarily work on canvas, creating large, medium, and small-sized pieces, as well as works on paper. I am particularly known for my large abstract landscapes, many of which are inspired by the natural world, with a significant focus on water. I take great pride in the opportunity for people to engage with my work, encouraging them to reflect on what they see and interpret it in their own way. While my intention may not always align with their interpretations, it is essential for me that viewers derive something meaningful from the experience, something that comes from within themselves. What sets me apart from others, I believe, is my unique style and technique.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters to me most is family; they come first. My wife, my daughter, and her husband are my greatest motivations. Without strong relationships like these, it’s challenging to inspire yourself to be the best person you can be. The support I receive from my wife is incredibly important to me. Regardless of whether you’re an artist, a businessperson, or in any other field, having that family connection is vital. With their encouragement and support, I am able to create art with confidence.
