Rising Stars: Meet Keyana Kirkland of Los Angeles, CA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Keyana Kirkland

Hi Keyana, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was born and raised in Lansing, MI. After graduating from Holt High School, my family and I moved to Houston, TX, where I pursued a degree in Public Relations. After college, I moved to my dream city of Atlanta, GA, where I got engaged to my now husband – who is also from Lansing (go East Lansing Trojans) – and we now live in Los Angeles, CA. Here, I work as a Public Relations Manager, managing brands in the luxury home industry. I am also an influencer, documenting my life’s journey on my YouTube channel “Keeping Up with Keyana,” showcasing all things Lifestyle, Home Design, Fashion, and more. Additionally, I am the founder of BLK Girl LA, a community organization where I host curated events for black women in the Los Angeles area.

Since moving from Michigan in 2013, I’ve had the opportunity to build my career and network across multiple states, which has led to some amazing opportunities. My husband and I were contestants on the TBS game show hosted by Dwyane Wade called “The Cube.” Most recently, we were featured on “Not Like Mama,” a cooking show hosted by Tia Mowry and Terrell Grice.

Living in Los Angeles for the past three years has been an incredible experience and has offered me countless opportunities to explore diverse cultures, make meaningful connections, and establish a fulfilling life.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The journey of life is never a smooth ride, and learning to pivot has been crucial. Relocating multiple times has taught me to step out of my comfort zone and adapt. Each city offers something different, so being able to navigate those spaces and figuring out ways to build community in a new place is important.

As I navigate my career and personal brand online, adapting to the ever-evolving landscape is essential. I’ve learned that everything is a process, and staying true to myself is key.

Despite obstacles, this journey has been rewarding, and I will continue to go after my goals and dreams.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am an Influencer, Public Relations Specialist, and Community Organizer. My mission is to motivate and empower individuals to pursue their aspirations by sharing my personal journey and experiences as I navigate my way through life.
One of my proudest moments has been realizing the positive impact I’ve had in such a relatively short time. It’s incredibly gratifying to hear how I’ve encouraged others to pursue their own ambitions. While I believe there’s still much more ahead for me, knowing that I can make even the slightest difference in people’s lives is truly fulfilling.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Some of my most cherished childhood memories involve the countless hours I spent immersed in creativity at home in my room. My passion for the arts led me to frequently engage in activities like drawing, DIY projects, and utilizing my sewing machine to transform pillowcases into dresses. I also enjoyed organizing impromptu photoshoots, envisioning myself as a contestant on America’s Next Top Model. I guess it’s safe to say that I’ve always been a true creative at heart.
