Today we’d like to introduce you to Mehreen Buksh
Hi Mehreen, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey into event planning began when I was 14, volunteering at my local mosque. I organized youth and community events, handling everything from procuring speakers to developing timelines, managing budgets, and more. This experience sparked my passion for bringing people together through organized and meaningful events.
Throughout undergrad and grad school, I always made it a point to join clubs or organizations where I could assist with event planning. Somehow, I’ve always found myself dedicating time to create the most perfect version of anyone’s vision. Whether it was a wedding, a community event, or an organizational gathering, I took pride in bringing structure to the chaos and turning ideas into reality. It’s a type of stress that I enjoy.
Over the years, I’ve also built strong relationships with vendors across Michigan, from small business owners to larger companies, which has been key in executing successful events. I’m very detail-oriented and thrive on organizing what may seem like a “mess” into something beautiful. Seeing my clients or couples satisfied with my work is the most rewarding part of the process.
Earlier this year, I took the leap and launched my event planning business, Miraj Events. It’s been a fulfilling journey so far, and I’m excited to continue growing and creating special moments for others!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road, but the challenges have shaped me and helped me grow. One of the biggest hurdles is the uncertainty and unpredictability that comes with event planning. Things don’t always go as planned—whether it’s last-minute changes from a client or unexpected vendor issues—but I’ve learned to stay calm, adapt quickly, and find solutions under pressure.
This field is not for everyone. It takes a specific type of person to take on so much heat and stress without letting it consume you. You’ve got to be confident in yourself and your skillset to be the first face that vendors, venues, clients, and even their friends and family see when issues arise. Managing all of that with a calm and collected approach is crucial to success in event planning.
In this field, you meet many different people with diverse personalities—some you may get along with easily, while others might be more challenging. It’s your job as an event planner to maintain a professional yet caring relationship with everyone you encounter, regardless of the situation. Saving face and staying composed, even in stressful or difficult situations, is essential to ensuring a smooth experience for all involved.
Another challenge was building my client base from scratch. Launching my business required a lot of effort to market myself, network with vendors, and gain trust from potential clients. There’s always the pressure to make sure everything goes perfectly, and while I enjoy the process, it can definitely be stressful. But it’s a type of stress I thrive on because seeing an event come together in the end makes it all worth it.
Balancing multiple events and wearing many hats as a business owner has been a learning curve, too. From managing finances to coordinating with clients, every day brings new challenges. But I’ve embraced these struggles as part of the journey, and they’ve helped me become more resilient, resourceful, and confident in what I do.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Over the next 5-10 years, I expect to see some significant shifts and trends in the event planning industry. One of the biggest changes is the increased focus on technology and virtual elements in events. Even though in-person gatherings are making a strong comeback, hybrid events (with both in-person and virtual components) are likely to continue growing, especially for corporate and larger events. This means event planners will need to adapt by incorporating more tech-savvy solutions, such as live streaming, virtual reality experiences, and interactive online platforms, to engage both in-person and virtual attendees.
Sustainability is another trend that I see becoming more prominent. Clients are increasingly looking for eco-friendly options when it comes to their events, whether it’s through sustainable décor, zero-waste catering options, or energy-efficient venues. As event planners, we’ll need to be more mindful of our environmental footprint and work with vendors who prioritize sustainability.
Personalization will continue to be a big trend as well. Clients are no longer satisfied with cookie-cutter events—they want unique, tailored experiences that reflect their personalities and values. Whether it’s custom décor, creative food stations, or personalized entertainment, the demand for highly individualized events is only going to grow.
Inclusivity and diversity will also take center stage. Events will need to cater to a wide range of cultural backgrounds, preferences, and accessibility needs. Planners who can create inclusive experiences that make all guests feel welcome and valued will stand out.
Lastly, I think the demand for smaller, more intimate gatherings will continue to rise. People are prioritizing meaningful connections over large, extravagant events. Micro-weddings and private parties with personalized touches will likely remain popular, especially as people continue to focus on quality over quantity.
Overall, I think the industry will become more dynamic and personalized, and event planners will need to be even more adaptable and innovative to stay ahead of the trends.
