Meet Alexa Lauretano of Royal Oak

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexa Lauretano

Hi Alexa, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My story as an artist began long before I ever held a professional camera. As a child, I found magic in my dad’s old film camera, capturing moments through a lens and experimenting with other mediums like watercolor and painting. These early explorations were my first steps into the world of art, but it was photography that truly spoke to my soul. I remember the moment I asked for a camera for Christmas, a simple wish that would forever change my life. My parents’ belief in me—shown through that first camera—ignited a spark that I carry with me to this day.

Fast forward to 2013, I took a leap of faith, leaving college in Arizona to return to Michigan. I had been offered a role as a second shooter for a wedding photographer in Detroit, a chance I couldn’t let slip away. That decision opened doors, introducing me to a creative community that continues to inspire and challenge me.

Photography became more than just a passion; it became a means of expression, a way to connect with the world around me and help others see themselves in their truest form. I’ve always believed in the power of community over competition, and through my lens, I aim to reflect not only my own journey but the unique beauty of each person I photograph.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s definitely been a journey of highs and lows, both smooth and challenging. There have been moments where I’ve questioned whether I’m on the right path—moments when imposter syndrome crept in, making me doubt my own abilities. As an artist, it’s easy to fall into the trap of comparing yourself to others or feeling like you’re not enough, especially in a world that often tells you otherwise.

I’ve also encountered people along the way who didn’t have my best interests at heart. Navigating a creative community isn’t always easy, and I had to learn to trust myself and my vision, even when others didn’t. Paving my own path has meant learning to tune out the noise and not letting what others think of me define my worth.

Being an artist has been almost a spiritual journey—one of constant change, evolution, and growth. I’ve come to embrace that I’m always learning and becoming, both as an artist and as a person. Though the road hasn’t always been smooth, I’m endlessly grateful that I get to walk this path, creating and sharing art in this life. It’s a privilege I don’t take lightly.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My work is all about capturing the authenticity and unique energy of the people I photograph. As a photographer, I specialize in telling stories through images—whether it’s a wedding, a creative portrait, or a moment of quiet reflection. My goal is to reveal the raw, beautiful essence of my clients, showing them not just as they appear but as they truly are.

What sets me apart is my deep belief in art as a form of self-expression, both for myself and for those I photograph. I’m passionate about making my clients feel seen and celebrated for their individuality. Each shoot is an opportunity for me to create a space where people can be vulnerable, joyful, and completely themselves. I’m proud of the connections I’ve built, and the way my work resonates with people on a deeper level.

I’m most proud of the relationships I’ve cultivated along the way, especially within the artistic community. It’s not just about the images; it’s about the trust and collaboration that goes into every project. I believe in using my art to uplift and inspire others. What I do is more than just a profession—it’s a way of creating meaningful connections and capturing moments that people will treasure forever.

What does success mean to you?
For me, success isn’t about accolades or outward recognition; it’s about the fulfillment that comes from creating something meaningful. As an artist, success is defined by the moments when my work resonates with someone, when a photograph captures the true essence of a person or a fleeting moment in time. It’s about being able to express myself authentically through my art and help others see themselves in ways they might not have before.

Success is also about growth—constantly evolving, challenging myself, and pushing boundaries creatively. It’s a deeply personal and spiritual journey, where every new project is an opportunity to learn something new, not just about my craft, but about myself. If I can look at my work and feel proud of the story it tells, if I can connect with others on an emotional level, that is the truest measure of success for me.

At the end of the day, success means creating art that matters—art that moves people, that makes them feel seen and understood. And if I can continue to do that, then I consider myself successful.
