Daily Inspiration: Meet Karen Schultz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Schultz

Hi Karen , so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was a foster parent for 13 years, having fostered 24 kids and countless kids for respite. Very early on, the kids picked “Gia” as my grandma nickname. I have always enjoyed baking and cooking and the foster kiddos always said I was the best “cooker” ever! I took a cookie decorating class back in 2020 and was hooked. I knew it was such a special way to make people happy and spread joy. It was a hobby until I retired and it was the best decision ever. The smiles on kids faces when then see their cookies is priceless. My absolute favorite cookies though, will also be for adoption celebrations!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Oh boy, the cookie decorating road can be as lumpy as the cookie dough sometimes! Typically, I bake late into the night and sometimes all night. When you drop a tray of cookies and have to remake them in the middle of night, you just want to give up. Then, the customer picks them and lights up with so much happiness that it makes all the stress worth it! It’s so funny how the customer never knows the stress that goes into their order and that is how it should be.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I make custom decorated sugar cookies for any occasion. I love working with the customer to design cookies that match the theme of their event. I have done births, first birthdays, 70th wedding anniversaries, graduations, corporate orders and even memorial services. Once I even made do-it-yourself decorating kids for over a hundred foster families. That was truly a privilege to do.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I have been very lucky to have such a huge support system with family and friends. Most of my customers are referred from previous customers who are so happy to share my name. I just love when a new customer calls to tell me they ate one of my cookies a few years ago and have been saving my info for the right time. That is what I called being blessed with a great customer base (and a great tasting cookie)!
