Rising Stars: Meet Nykeya Vaughn of Ypsilanti Mi

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nykeya Vaughn

Nykeya, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Hi, my name is Nykeya Vaughn. I am the owner of BIG Bounce. I am a 21-year-old ambitious young lady with big dreams. When I was young, my parents started Mel’s Extreme Party Planning and Rental. It was a family-owned and operated business. Their mission was to provide party planning and rentals to families, churches, and businesses in and around Washtenaw County and the greater Detroit area. My parents desired to provide good service and big fun to all. In addition to good service, they wanted to do something good for the community. Raising a child with special needs, they wanted to give their son, along with other children, a chance to learn skills that would enhance the quality of life for them. In 2010, they were faced with a decision that would cause them to close Mel’s Extreme. Fortunately, I got the chance to ride alongside my dad and see the ins and outs of the business. I also saw the fun we brought to families. Seeing people happy and kids crying because they didn’t want the bouncer to leave their party impacted me, and I always wanted to be a part of those joyous times with families again. Today, I stand with the vision to recreate the family business and to provide the same opportunity that my parents sought after and to give myself, siblings, and my special needs brother meaningful and life-changing opportunities.
Our name actually means believing and greater. Believing that anything is possible.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not been smooth. This year felt very alone navigating this new journey. I felt lost and confused in my faith, moved back home with my parents, couldn’t pay my rent. I struggled with keeping up with unexpected business expense, not having enough help and just marketing a party rental company in Michigan.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Aside from the business I am a guest service specialist at University of Michigan DPSS. Currently in college. I work on the business any chance I get and just trying to make it better. I think something I am really proud of overcoming all of the adversity and challenges starting this business has brought. There is so much I wanna do in my community and in my life so this Definitely won’t be the end.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
I think one of the things that I’ve learned the most is to keep going the worst is never the worst. Nothing is as hard as you think it is You can always figure it out.
