Hi Nathan, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been a man of many hats. One of my favorite things is when my son says, “Wow, dad, you did that too?” Over the last three decades, I’ve worked in various industries, spending significant time in the restaurant industry and venturing into entrepreneurship. My entrepreneurial spirit sparked early, starting with my first paper route. Since then, I’ve explored diverse ventures, from creating a reptile pet store to running a cleaning business, a coffee roasting business, and even a technology and IT business. I also spent a good chunk of time installing cable and internet, learning about networks and computers.

My journey in entrepreneurship began in earnest with the start of a repossession business, where I invested a significant amount of money and turned it into a successful operation. However, in 2011, I lost everything—my business and my marriage—in the span of two days. This profound loss marked the beginning of a new chapter. My good friend of many years, Kyle Harris, a tattoo artist at Second Son Tattoo here in Traverse City, suggested a phoenix tattoo for my back, symbolizing my ability to rise from the ashes and rebuild quickly. The tattoo also features four feathers representing each of my kids, with the wings coming up over my shoulder, reminding me daily of my resilience.

After losing everything, I spent 10 years in the auto industry, focusing on finance. This period helped me gain valuable experience in financial management and business operations. During this time, I achieved what many consider the American dream—a nice car, a garage, an in-ground pool, a big house, and financial stability. Despite this, I felt empty inside and knew I was meant for something bigger. Seeking change, I joined J.Galt, where I met with hundreds of business owners and saw their struggles firsthand. Unfortunately, I realized that J.Galt could not offer any real value or assistance that these businesses needed. They were more of an MLM.

The realization of the unmet needs of business owners led to the birth of Rising Phoenix Business Services. Today, I am the founder of Rising Phoenix Business Services, where we empower small businesses to achieve strategic growth and innovation through expert guidance and cutting-edge technology. Our services include AI and Automation Integration, Strategic Growth Planning, Operational Efficiency, Financial Management and Funding Solutions, and a strategic blend of Coaching and Advising. This coaching focuses on identifying and overcoming limiting beliefs and self-sabotage techniques, helping business leaders unlock their full potential. I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road has been anything but smooth. One of the biggest challenges has been doing this on my own. When I joined J.Galt and faced financial difficulties, it impacted people’s confidence in me and their willingness to listen to what I had to say.

Another challenge has been helping people understand the current advancements in technology, especially in regions like Northern Michigan, where mindsets can be resistant to change.

Being a single father of four children has added another layer of complexity. Balancing the demands of raising my kids, budgeting, managing time, staying motivated, and creating consistency has been incredibly challenging.

Driving Uber periodically has always helped me navigate financial hard times. One of my biggest challenges has been consistently failing and trying new things. However, it’s in the act of trying new things that I find resilience. Neuroscience reveals that our brains adapt and grow from failure. Each setback triggers neural pathways that strengthen our problem-solving abilities, fostering a mindset primed for success. Every failure is a lesson learned, an opportunity to come back stronger, and a testament to the brain’s incredible capacity for growth and renewal.

How do you define success?
At one point in my life, I defined success by the level of financial accomplishment I had achieved. After reaching my rudimentary goals and moving beyond where most of my peers were, I realized that this wasn’t true success at all. In fact, it felt more like a trap, making me feel stuck.

Now, I define success not by monetary value, but by the greater impact I can make in the world and the significant influence I can have on the individuals I meet. This shift in perspective has been transformative for me.

Albert Einstein once said, “Try not to be a man of success, but a man of value.” This resonates deeply with my journey, as I’ve come to understand that being a person of value involves enriching the lives of those around you, creating a positive impact, and fostering genuine connections

Moreover, Michael Jordan highlighted this beautifully when he said, ‘I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times I’ve been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.’ This perfectly encapsulates my current definition of success

In essence, true success is measured by the positive changes we inspire and the meaningful relationships we build, rather than just financial achievements. My goal now is to leave a lasting impact, helping others grow and succeed along the way.
