Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristen Hartley
Hi Kristen , so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is Kristen Hartley, and I’m the proud owner of Harpe Star. While photography is my main focus, I also explore film, web design, graphic design, and performance art under this name. My passion for photography runs deep, rooted in my family’s history. I grew up in Manistee, spending countless hours at my family’s camera store, Hokanson’s Camera. My dad took over the store in 1984, and it became like a second home to me. Although he retired and closed the store in 2020, those early years were a huge inspiration and laid the foundation for my artistic journey.
I earned my BFA in Photography from Northern Michigan University in Marquette. After graduation, I moved to the Traverse City area, where I’ve been creating art for the past decade. In the summer of 2019, I officially launched Harpe Star, though I’ve been passionate about photography my whole life. I specialize in capturing theatre, live music, weddings, portraits, and a variety of fun events. I love embracing the quirky and unusual, which aligns perfectly with my role as a troupe member of Mash-up Rock & Roll Musical, a local theatre company.
As a Northern Michigan local, I’m constantly inspired by the natural beauty around me. But my connection to this area goes beyond photography. I’m also the marketing chair and treasurer for Up North Pride, where I’m dedicated to spreading love and awareness.
My commitment to the community extends to my role as the Member Experience Specialist at Cherryland Electric Cooperative, a member-owned utility focused on supporting the community. This dedication is what drew me to Cherryland, and it’s a big part of why I love my job.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road, and I want to acknowledge the privilege and support I’ve had along the way. Like many artists, I grapple with imposter syndrome and self-doubt, which can be overwhelming at times. These feelings, however difficult, have taught me valuable lessons and helped shape the person I am today.
I’ve encountered my share of setbacks, each one serving as a learning opportunity that has contributed to my growth. As a neurodivergent person with ADHD, I’ve faced unique challenges that have required significant effort, adjustments, and strategies to overcome. ADHD presents both gifts and hurdles; it fuels my creativity and drive, yet it also demands careful management and understanding. I also recognize that everyone’s experience with neurodivergence is different, and I’m mindful of the privileges I’ve had in accessing resources and support that others may not.
My journey has been one of self-discovery, resilience, and continuous learning. The struggles I’ve faced have deepened my empathy for others and have made me more determined to advocate for inclusivity and understanding, both in my work and in the broader community. It’s important to me to acknowledge that while my path has been challenging, it has also been shaped by the support of a community that values and embraces diversity in all its forms.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
While I’ve touched on this before, I want to emphasize that my work at Harpe Star is deeply rooted in photography. One of the aspects I’m most proud of is the safe and accepting environment I’ve cultivated in my studio. It’s not just a place for taking photos; it’s a space where clients can fully express themselves—experimenting, playing, and creating without fear of judgment. I strive to foster a positive, collaborative atmosphere by adopting a “yes, and” approach, which encourages creativity and openness.
In my studio, my goal is to remove any anxiety or hesitation someone might feel about getting their portrait taken. I understand that being in front of a camera can be intimidating, so I prioritize making the experience as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. By creating a welcoming environment, I aim to empower my clients to explore their authentic selves, allowing their true personalities to shine through in every shot.
Ultimately, I believe that photography is not just about capturing images—it’s about capturing the essence of a person, and that can only happen when they feel safe and supported. This commitment to a nurturing, judgment-free space is at the heart of what I do at Harpe Star.
