Meet Ja’kia Lowe of Detroit

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ja’kia Lowe

Ja’kia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I always had a passion for cooking I remember when I was a kid I would watch my mom make macaroni and cheese in the kitchen and she would give me a slice and that would be one of our bonding moments. I was 11 when my mom transitioned and thats when I took over making meals for my family. At 22 I started to experiment more in my apartment kitchen and actually started selling dinners and loved the feedback I got. Since then I participated in many pop ups, catered many events, and recently launched my website for bookings. When Im not cooking I like to travel and try new foods its fun, keeps my creative mind flowing and learning more about different cultural food.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Finding a good balance has been a struggle. I still work as a nurse on the side so thankfully my job has been very flexible and understanding but it has been a-lot of tired nights. Sometimes I don’t think people realize how much labor and preparation is involved in cooking. Finding time to balance a personal life, work life and everything else in between can be very challenging but I found being organized and creating a routine helps.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I love making pasta its so versatile and sometimes I don’t gatekeep my recipes. I usually do recipe videos on my social networks and most of them are budget friendly. I try to keep my content as authentic as I can and it makes me so proud when people actually get in the kitchen and try it.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
I learned to save, utilize your down time to research but also understand the beauty in stillness. Also whether you like it or not this is a social media era and it could be beneficial so you gotta use it
