Today we’d like to introduce you to Carli Galey
Hi Carli, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My name is Carli, and I was born and raised in Lansing, Michigan. In 2013, moved to Kalamazoo to earn my Bachelor’s Degree in Family Studies from Western Michigan University. In 2020, my fiancé and I moved back to Lansing due to the pandemic for a better housing opportunity. During Christmas time in 2020, money was pretty tight, and I was in need of a DIY gift I could make and give to multiple people. Candles for some reason caught my attention, and I made a handful of them as gifts for family and friends. After receiving such positive feedback from them about my candles, I decided to look further into what it would take to make them on a more professional scale. I started Carli’s Candles officially in October of 2021, and began to sell them on my website and on Etsy. Carli’s Candles are cute, creepy, and cozy – and are as pure as can be! All products are made of 100% soy wax, and Phthalate-free, high-quality fragrance oils. All wax melts and candles are handmade in my home-studio in small batches, with good intentions, and positive energy. Carli’s Candles products are also available to purchase at Capital City Market in Downtown Lansing!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s not always a smooth road, as I have had my ups and downs in the candle business. Sometimes sales are few and far between it feels, but I know that what I produce are high-quality, creative, and beautiful products, and that keeps me going. I also have such great support in so many ways from my fiancé and family.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Carli’s Candles’ products stand out amongst the crowd due to their captivating colors, artistic labels, fragrances, and high-quality materials. There are currently 14 different scents available on CarlisCandles.com, and a good majority of them are inspired by cryptids, Halloween, and fantasy. I’ve always been interested and inspired by the macabre, and wanted to convey that in my label art for these products. The creative process of making a new product, picking a theme, the scent, and designing the look is my favorite part.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love Lansing simply because I was raised here, and all that the city has to offer. There are so many opportunities here in Lansing if you look for them. I also love that the majority of my family lives here, and I am able to spend quality time with them more than when I lived in Kalamazoo. Lansing isn’t perfect, but it’s improved since I was a child, and it’s great to see the city on the upward swing!
