Meet Emily Kane of Incandescent Glow Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Kane

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
In 2012, I was hired as a police officer. I went through a Crime Scene Investigation course through the department and was taught all about photography. One of the senior Specialists had a photography business and taught us the in’s and outs of manual mode photography. Throughout the years I stuck with photography at crime scenes and left it at that. After I got married, I realized wedding photography was something I had an interest in. I already had the photography basics down, like lighting, exposure, composition, etc but frankly did not know. how to shoot a living subject. I began working with another photographer as her assistant/second shooter and quickly found that wedding photography was the type of high pace, high stress environment I knew as a police officer, without the thanklessness or risk of dying. I launched my own photography business in 2022 and retired from the police force in 2024 to pursue my master’s degree and do wedding photography full time.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been easy leaving my career as a police officer. I was with the department for 11 years and it was essentially all I knew as an adult. Thankfully my husband is extremely supportive of me and my dreams and supported my decision to leave a stable, full time job to pursue self-employment. Essentially having to “hustle” your way into drumming up business versus having a steady paycheck every two weeks was a huge change for me. I have always been self sufficient so having to trust that I can be a small business owner was scary.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Incandescent Glow Photography?
I specialize in wedding photography. I love the fast pace, high stress environment of making a wedding day run smoothly. Wedding photos are one of the few things you will ALWAYS have from your wedding day and knowing that my clients trusted ME to preserve those memories is amazing. I am a very outgoing person and pride myself in being able to keep clients comfortable, even when they’re self proclaimed “awkward” in front of the camera. I love candidness because I think those moments make for the most authentic photographs. I love to edit my photos in a true color, semi-vintage look. I believe this style is timeless and will withstand all of the trends that come and go throughout the years.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Having contracted Covid-19 VERY early on in 2020, causing me to be off work for about four months due to complications, I learned that life is too short to be miserable at a job that no longer serves you. Being self employed is extremely risky however I find myself enjoying life a lot more now.
