Conversations with Tony Mitchell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tony Mitchell

Hi Tony, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Basic Comfort started in 2017 as my senior capstone project at the School of Music at Western Michigan University. My initial goal was to create a concept album under the moniker “Basic Comfort.” This project was not only a professional endeavor but also a deeply personal way to express myself to the world. Fortunately, I didn’t embark on this journey alone. While I wrote much of the music, I cherished the collaborative process of creating with others. Some of my collaborators were equally enthusiastic about performing live, which led to the formation of the band.

Since then, Basic Comfort has evolved through various line-ups, with each member contributing to the unique sound we have today. The bonds we’ve formed are lifelong, and for me, this project will always be a part of my life. Sharing the stage and studio with these talented individuals has been a profound gift. Our current lineup includes myself (singer, synth, keys), Paul Schaedig (singer, guitarist), Mike Anyonga (singer, guitarist), Ryan Edgar (bassist), and Sam Ephland (drummer).

In late 2019, we released “Drift,” a pivotal moment where our sound truly began to take shape. However, just as we were about to embark on our first tour in 2020, the global pandemic hit, and everything changed. Despite the disappointment, we continued writing music remotely and planning for future shows. In hindsight, this period was a blessing in disguise, as it allowed us to refine our vision for the band.

By early 2022, we gained new momentum, securing an Artist Development grant from the Kalamazoo Arts Council. This grant helped fund our album “DIMENSIONS” (released December 1st, 2023) and our music video “All About You,” which I directed and produced through my company, Texture House. Since 2020, my bandmate Paul Schaedig and I have been running Texture House Sound & Visuals, our production company. This venture has allowed us to produce our own music and video content at a high level, and the slower pace during the lockdown enabled us to expand into filmmaking, a field I’ve always dreamed of.

Balancing my roles as a team leader, band member, and entrepreneur has been challenging yet incredibly rewarding. Creating music and films is a dream come true, and I am grateful for the journey that brought me here. Basic Comfort is not just a band; it’s a testament to the power of collaboration, resilience, and the pursuit of creative passions.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. Two of the biggest challenges we’ve faced, which many artists encounter, are funding and valuing our worth. Creating art at a high caliber requires significant time, energy, and collaboration. Securing funding has always been a major hurdle. Whether it’s through payouts from shows, grants, or support from our fans, finding the financial resources to bring our artistic visions to life has been an ongoing challenge. Despite these difficulties, I wouldn’t trade this journey for anything, as it has taught us the importance of perseverance and creativity in overcoming obstacles.

Another significant struggle has been valuing our worth internally. In an industry teeming with talent, it’s easy to question the impact of our work. However, through this journey, I’ve learned that every voice matters and that our efforts do not go unnoticed. The key is to stay true to the music within us and keep our heads up, knowing that our contributions resonate with someone out there.

These struggles have been integral to our growth, shaping us into the artists we are today. They remind us to appreciate the support we receive and to believe in the value of our unique creative expressions.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I wear many hats, but at the core, I am a musician and filmmaker. My expertise lies in post-production sound, where I work as a sound designer, audio mixing engineer, and composer. Additionally, I am an entrepreneur and business owner, leading a team of three exceptionally talented individuals at Texture House Sound & Visuals.

One of my proudest achievements recently has been winning the Best R&B Michigan Music Video award. This recognition reflects the dedication and creativity we pour into our projects.

What sets me apart is my communication and situational awareness skills. I thrive in a fast-paced, highly creative environment and am a deep thinker, which allows me to navigate complex projects effectively. As a band, what makes Basic Comfort stand out is our thoughtful lyrics juxtaposed with an old-school groove, electric piano vibes, airy synth flourishes, chorus-laden guitars, funky rhythms, and sweet vocals with smooth harmonies.

These elements combine to create a unique and captivating sound that resonates with our audience, making our work both distinctive and impactful.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
My friends and family have been my greatest inspiration. Since the beginning of this journey, there has always been someone who believed in my talent and drive, even before I saw it within myself. Their unwavering support has been instrumental in my growth and success.

Getting into therapy has also been a significant factor in developing a sense of self-worth and finding internal validation. This journey of self-discovery has been further enriched by several books that have offered valuable insights and tools.

One such book is “How to Make It in the New Music Business” by Ari Herstand, which has provided practical advice and industry knowledge crucial for navigating the music world. “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho has been a profound source of inspiration, encouraging me to pursue my personal legend with courage and determination. More recently, “The Untethered Soul” by Michael A. Singer has crossed my path, offering profound insights into achieving inner peace and understanding oneself on a deeper level.

These resources have not only enhanced my professional journey but also contributed to my personal growth, equipping me with the wisdom and tools to succeed in various areas of my life.
