Meet Rae Sherman of Lansing

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rae Sherman

Hi Rae, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
First of all, thank you for the opportunity to speak about my journey. It’s a different role for me, as I’m usually the one asking questions.

I’ve been a storyteller since I was young. My desire to continue lead me to chase a life based in Los Angeles. Although, I realized that dream was not in alignment with my core values.

So, I gave up pursuing a fantasy to find truth in journalism.

I attended University of Southern California & dove head first into coursework. As people around me were going to frat parties, I was on the streets of Los Angeles creating a documentary about homelessness and interviewing people across the world for my thesis project; the rising trend in millennials combatting the 9-5.

Upon graduation, behind the scenes I was working the ‘starving artist’ lifestyle when the pandemic hit.

During this time, writing took a new form. Words poured out of me as a newfound spirituality flowed in. I focused on inner healing & became more self aware. My yoga practice also deepened in this space of forced isolation.

My partner & I currently are creating a space right here in mid Michigan that aims to provide yoga and wellness to the community. We have big plans for our business- which has recently been approved as ‘OverFlow Yoga & Wellness.’ It will start with workshops & yoga offerings, with the goal of providing a permanent space for inner & outer wellness. https://www.instagram.com/overflow.yogawellness?igsh=aGZvOWwxMTRpZTVu&utm_source=qr

My current job encompasses a lot of my passions & talents. As the morning reporter, I have the privilege of bringing news to the community- through reporting on new research being done to solve climate change, advocates rallying at The Capitol, and new exhibitions the MSU Broad Art Museum is featuring.

I’m thrilled to be stepping into a new chapter as a yoga teacher and small business owner- all while continuing sharing stories to the Michigan audience.

Here for you now, Rae Sherman (;

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Of course there have been struggles along my journey, and challenges I am still facing.

Nonetheless, adversity has created an opportunity for growth; and I believe it has the power to allow us a deeper understanding of ourselves and the world around us.

I moved to Los Angeles when I was 18, to pursue a career in the arts. At the time, I was living in East Los Angeles and 2 thousand miles away from everything I knew.

Along my journey, I have struggled with mental & emotional challenges. The fluctuations of life have impacted me, however I’ve been able to receive support.

Two years ago, I suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury and Post-Concussive Syndrome (PCC), right before a planned month-long trip to Spain for acrobatic training. It took me five months to recover, dealing with symptoms like mental health issues, headaches, neck pains, and a loss of spirit.

This changed my trajectory; quite literally hitting me on the head and forcing my situation to be reevaluated. This lead me to leave the city.

My life became a series of cliches once I moved to Michigan- a place I never thought I would be again, after growing up in metro Detroit.

However, ‘never say never.’

It’s been incredibly fulfilling here. I’ve been focusing on cultivating a community, reconnecting with my family, and creating a life for myself.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As mentioned, I am a morning reporter here in Lansing.

I’m almost the definition of an ‘early bird.’ However, there are no actual birds awake when my 2:45a.m. alarm hits.

Apart from my job, I’m known for my yoga practice & incessant need to handstand. I believe life is much more enjoyable upside down; finding the balance point between my body and mind.

I’ve been a foster for kitties and ‘crazy cat lady’ for several years now. Through the first litter I fostered here in Lansing, I adopted my daughter ‘Aries.’ She is my entire world.

My originality takes form in questioning social norms, having a bold personality and exuding a multi-dimensional approach to life. I’m proud of my ability to face challenges head on, not being afraid to speak my mind, and making dreams a reality.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
I’m most happy in expansive environments that activate the senses and create a sense of ease within. Nature has always been a place to elicits those feelings.

In my own space, I cultivate this feeling by using candles, warm or natural light, music & more. I guess you could say I enjoy being on ‘vibe control.’

More mood boosters include warm embraces, easing into the mornings and winding down at night, thrifting, time with my kitty, and of course yoga. I find intensity in running to also be quite therapeutic.

My boujee side tells me going to restaurants, finding the perfect rooftop bar and maximizing every moment is a way to happiness, but that is mostly just a guilty pleasure.

Often, I find myself moving fast and have to remind myself that happiness comes from the seemingly inconsequential moments in between the ‘big stuff.’
