

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Lindsay Verwys.
Hi Lindsay, we’re so excited to have you on the platform. Before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I started a property management vacation rental business in December of 2018 with one property. By word of mouth, we have grown to 20 properties managed, and we own four rentals today. Pre-2018, we dreamed out load with our friends about how cool it would be someday to own rental properties or how cool it would be to manage rental properties for other people.
Sharing this story out loud with our friends actually helped. One of our friends banked this info and, one day, heard someone complaining about their current rental management situation. Our friends shared our names with the person and said we were just starting our business. Our friend quickly called us and said I found your first client!
We quickly scrambled and got the documents together we needed, including an LLC, a management agreement, and a website. From that first rental, we have grown organically by word of mouth. The income from managing other people’s rentals helped us get together a down payment for the rentals we now own.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Smooth road… not really. When I started this business, my oldest had just started Kindergarten in the fall. I had a 3-year-old, a 2-year-old, and a 9-month-old at home.
Having four kids, all six and under, was challenging in itself. Starting your own business was a little crazy, but it was also so much fun. Growing organically allowed owners to come to us and seek us out.
We didn’t have to sell ourselves, and because of that, I think they’ve been more loyal to us. We are still managing our first rental today, which is five and a half years later.
We’ve been impressed with Boyneland Vacation Rentals, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are a property management company serving the greater Boyne Area with quality vacation rentals.
We specialize in clean, comfortable homes with amenities that make you feel like you’re staying in your home away from home. I am still the main person to contact, so when we onboard our owners, they start with me and end with me. While I have a great group of cleaners, handymen, and assistants, it gives our owners peace of mind knowing they can call me with any concerns or questions.
I am proud that we host thousands of guests each year in the Boyne area. We live and work in the town we are hosting, so it’s fun to share all the cool things about Boyne with guests! What were you like growing up?
I’m a firstborn with two younger sisters, and I was the boss. I played sports all through school: basketball, cheerleading, and soccer. I loved being busy and social, always wanting to be with friends and doing something!
I grew up wanting to be a teacher and a mom. I taught high school social studies for five years and then “retired” when I became a mom with my first of 4 kids (2 boys and two girls). Now I love working from home on the vacation rental business.
