Community Highlights: Meet Joe Lober of Moments In Time Disc Jockeys

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joe Lober

Joe, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey may look a little different most entrepreneur and business owners. I never went to school for business. I had no idea how to market, manage the books, or staff employees. Everything for me was starting from ground zero. My career prior to launching Moments In Time Disc Jockeys was a teaching and coaching middle school Algebra in Holland MI. I was born into a teaching and coaching family so I followed the footsteps of many family members. After ten years of teaching and coaching I decided to transform my hobby of music into my new career path. It was the most scary feeling I’ve had. I’m sure most small business owners felt the same way. You leave your career and enter the unknown. I describe the feeling of starting your own business as jumping off a bridge but with no flotation below. Are you going to sink, swim, or are you going to float. It’s a lot of hard work and hours to make your hobby float. And that we did. I found teaching, coaching, and operating a business share several similarities. All three involve imparting knowledge, guiding others, and managing resources. Teaching involves imparting knowledge to students in an educational setting, while coaching involves providing guidance and support to individuals or teams in a specific area. Operating a business involves managing resources, leading a team, and making decisions to achieve specific goals. In all three areas, effective communication, problem-solving skills, and the ability to motivate and inspire others are essential. Additionally, a strong work ethic, dedication, and a commitment to excellence are important qualities for success! Moments In Time Disc Jockeys has come a long way since 2004 and has catered to several thousand events in Grand Rapids & West Michjgan. Along the way we’ve picked up The Best of The Knot, The Couples Choice Awards each year since 2010, and even been placed into The Knot Hall Of Fame in 2015. I must say we have gained the respect from our clients, peers, and community.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Being an entrepreneur and business owner you head into it knowing there will be bumps in the road. You always keep your focus, ask for help when needed, and keep learning from others. That’s all part of the learning process. The DJ company business is a challenging but rewarding field. Some of the obstacles and challenges include:

Competition – The DJ industry is competitive, with many companies vying for clients. It can be difficult to stand out and attract new customers.

Long hours – DJ’s often work long hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays. This can be physically and mentally demanding.

Equipment costs – DJ equipment can be expensive, and it can be difficult to keep up with the latest technology and quickly changing music trends.

Marketing – Marketing is essential for any DJ company, but it can be time-consuming and expensive.

Client management – DJ’s need to be able to manage clients’ expectations and deal with difficult situations.

Staffing – Keeping trained staff is the most difficult piece of the business. The training process and mastery of the DJ position takes months and months of training so it takes a team to make this happen.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Moments In Time Disc Jockeys is a full service mobile DJ company specializing in weddings, schools, and corporate events. We also have add on services including photobooths, up-lighting, and glow wands. It’s really a one stop shop in your entertainment. We also have full time staff to help with managing wedding planning needs. Most of our work is in West Michigan and within 35 miles of Grand Rapids, MI

What’s next?
We are always recruiting new staff members and adding to our team. We have to keep building and training. Other than that, no big changes in the near future. I would say staying up to date on the technology, new software, music platforms, and equipment needed to running a successful DJ service is part of our growth as well.
