Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Debs
Hi Sarah, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey into the world of baking began as a hobby in my own kitchen, where I spent countless hours experimenting with recipes and decorating techniques. Family and friends loved my creations and encouraged me to consider turning my passion into a business.
Along the way, I noticed a growing interest in hands-on culinary experiences, so I introduced cake-decorating workshops. These workshops have become a hit, providing a fun and interactive way for people to celebrate special occasions or enjoy a creative activity together. These events have helped me build an enthusiastic customer base, from girls’ nights to birthday parties, and date nights. This allows me to share my love of baking and decorating with others.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Running a small business comes with its fair share of obstacles and challenges. Managing growth has been a challenge since I am the sole baker, decorator, and instructor for Sugar’D. Baking and decorating are creative processes, but running a business involves administrative, marketing, and financial tasks that can sometimes be overwhelming.
Hosting cake decorating workshops requires not only baking skills but also event planning and teaching abilities. Ensuring each workshop runs smoothly and participants are engaged and happy is crucial for a successful workshop.
Finding the right balance between being a creative baker and an effective business owner has been a continuous learning process.
Despite these challenges, overcoming them has been very rewarding and has contributed to the growth and success of Sugar’D.
We’ve been impressed with Sugar’D Bakery, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
What I am most proud of is the collection of skills I have developed and refined over the years. As a self-taught baker and creator, my aspiration is to establish Sugar’D as a haven where individuals can unleash their creativity, infusing a personal touch into cakes and cupcakes. There’s beauty in crafting something for someone else, which is the fundamental ethos guiding the Sugar’D workshops. Mastery doesn’t demand years of experience; all it requires is the right tools and guidance.
As Sugar’D continues to grow, I hope to expand into a space where people can bake, make their own buttercream, and fully immerse themselves in the art of cake creation.
How do you think about luck?
Luck has certainly played a role in both my life and business, and I’d say it’s been a mix of good and bad luck, each teaching valuable lessons and contributing to my journey.
I’ve been fortunate to have a supportive community that embraced my baking from the start. Family and friends who loved my creations spread the word, helping to build my initial customer base.
Launching my business during a time when there was a growing interest in personalized experiences worked in my favor. People were looking for unique ways to celebrate and connect, and my workshops provided just that.
Like many small business owners, I’ve faced unexpected expenses from equipment breakdowns to increases in ingredient costs, which tested my financial planning and resilience.
Overall, while luck has played a part, I’ve found that how I respond to both good and bad luck has been more important. Being adaptable, resilient, and willing to learn from every situation has allowed me to turn challenges into opportunities and capitalize on fortunate breaks when they come my way.
