Check Out Rachel Daugherty’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Daugherty

Hi Rachel , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
When I was a kid, I’d spend hours in my room making things. I’d draw, paint, or dabble in many different craft types.

As a college student I lost my connection with that kind of art. My world was dominated with theatre (my major) and papers and maintaining friendships.

In my mid 20s I started to reconnect with the side of me that loved painting and drawing. However, Covid 19 was really the catalyst for me to start painting consistently. I was home more than I had ever been as an adult and I started making things every day to fill the time.

Soon I started an Instagram for my art, then an redbubble shop, then an etsy shop, and so on. And my art kept evolving. Over these past four years I have started to be able to recognize my own personal artistic voice. It has truly been such an incredible process.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I often struggle with feelings of imposter syndrome. I have no formal art training. Everything I do is the result of trial and error. I can really slip into self doubt when I try to compare myself to other artists.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am primarily a painter. I dabble in a few other mediums, but I always come back to paint.

My favorite things to paint are animals. I’ve always been a little bit of a history nerd so I really enjoy turning different kinds of animals into historical figures.

That all started because I named my cat Napoleon. I wanted to paint his portrait, so I found an oil painting of Napoleon Bonaparte (his namesake) and painted the body like his then painted my cats face with it. It turned out so fun, I just kept going from there.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I think the best quality for an artist to have is a relentless sense of hope. It can be difficult to keep moving with your art when you feel like people don’t see the same value in it as you. But when you have enduring hope, you keep pushing because you know someone will see what you see in your art eventually.
