Meet Kelly Houseman of Grosse Pointe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Houseman

Hi Kelly, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I knew I wanted to be a therapist since I was 16 and had therapy myself for the first time. When I would walk out of that office feeling the light, free feeling I knew I wanted to pay it forward in the future to my own clients when they did that same walk out of my office.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There is unfortunately still a stigma and resistance to therapy and many people who would be best served by therapy are the ones that haven’t come around to it yet. I have spent my career advocating for ending the stigma and shame and fear around mental health. I have had many people unfollow me on Instagram still because they didn’t want to be associated with a “therapy account”. I understand that and everyone goes at their own pace and comfort level but I will never stop talking openly about mental health.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
In my practice I specialize in working with young adults in their 20s/30s going through life transitions (college, relationships/marriage, pregnancy and parenting). When I do speaking gigs and podcasts I often talk about the unrealistic expectations social media can place on us to be perfect and how we can take back our power and confidence in the real world.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
Honestly my own therapist helped me so much when it comes to being the therapist I am today. I would talk to her about everything from imposter syndrome to burnout and my own emotions that would come up in sessions. Especially for people in the helping profession we are often so busy “fixing” everyone else we can neglect our own well being. Its vital that we have an outlet as well.
