Hi Ross Junior, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It all started with a childhood habit of making household objects and appliances with what I had no idea was clay. Curiosity and discovery prompted my interest in ceramic art. Over the years, I took courses and practiced in workshops, honing my skills and developing my artistic expression. I have always worked to become a professional ceramic artist, showing my distinct style and inventiveness. Through experimentation and audience feedback, I am learning to understand, respond to, and express many topics in my work. Our perspectives collectively reflect the richness of creativity and cultural harmony.

Please talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned. Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As a Ghanaian ceramic artist, I’ve encountered numerous hurdles. The scarcity of high-quality materials, tools, and equipment has always posed a challenge. Moreover, the limited availability of formal education and training in ceramics has necessitated my reliance on self-study and informal learning methods. Selling my work, both locally and internationally, has been an uphill battle, especially considering the lack of recognition and support for ceramic art compared to other mediums. However, I’ve persisted, using my determination and ingenuity to overcome these obstacles. Despite the challenges, I’ve managed to network with other artists and employ innovative techniques to showcase my unique talents and cultural heritage on a global stage.

I appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As a clay artist, I specialize in creating functional ceramics and sculptural pieces that reflect my Ghanaian origin and artistic style. My work frequently incorporates traditional patterns, concepts, textures, colors, and contemporary influences. I have become known for my elaborate hand-carved designs and rigorous attention to detail, which give each piece a feeling of artistry and cultural significance. What I’m most proud of as a clay artist is my ability to combine tradition and innovation, resulting in sculptures that speak to viewers emotionally and culturally. My work celebrates a rich creative tradition while pushing the boundaries of what is possible with clay as a medium. What distinguishes me from others working with clay is my perspective and artistic voice, which are firmly steeped in my Ghanaian background, experiences, and responses to my environment. I tell narratives through my art, capturing the essence of Ghana’s diverse culture and history with every work I make. My dedication to authenticity and craftsmanship distinguishes me as I work to honor and elevate the traditions of Ghanaian ceramic art while simultaneously exploring new paths of creative expression.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Risk-taking, for me as an artist, is a vital aspect of my creative journey. While I wouldn’t label myself a fearless risk-taker, I recognize the necessity of stepping outside my comfort zone to foster innovation and personal growth. One significant risk I undertook was infusing my traditionally inspired ceramic pieces with contemporary elements. This decision meant venturing into uncharted territory, experimenting with unconventional shapes, colors, and techniques that diverged from my established style. Despite the uncertainty and fear of how my audience would react, embracing this risk was essential for my artistic evolution. Another significant leap of faith was participating in international art exhibitions and competitions. This venture required a substantial investment of time, resources, and energy to prepare and present my work globally. It was a daunting prospect, yet the opportunity to showcase my art to a broader audience and connect with fellow artists worldwide outweighed the risks. I approach risk-taking with caution and courage, carefully weighing the potential rewards against the consequences and ensuring that each leap aligns with my artistic vision and values. Ultimately, I’ve discovered that embracing uncertainty with confidence and conviction often leads to profound growth and discovery in my creative practice.
