Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Williams.
Hi Megan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I took a film photography class in high school and loved the process. I loved that you only got one shot at each frame, and even the ones that didn’t turn out were beautiful. I was going through a lot in my late teens that landed me in anger management. My counselor asked me what calms me down and gives me tunnel vision to find peace, and film photography was the answer. Since then, I have had other ancillary careers that I loved, but photography lights my brain up in a different way and allows my creative side to take over. I applied for jobs with many publications and finally landed one that sent me to a music festival in Atlanta. I was sold after that. I wanted to be in the pit, for every artist on every coast, til the end of time. Today, I do all types of photography, including studio, editorial, entertainment, concerts, festivals, artists, sports, and fashion, to name a few. But being on stage or in a pit with a musical artist or group lights me up every time.
It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not at all. The first struggle was finding a publication that would back you without much of a portfolio. TheyThey probably never should have hired me based on my outdated camera and lack of experience. But they did, and I’m so thankful they did because now I’m here. There are moments when you find yourself in a pit with people who don’t have the etiquette everyone should have. The fun part of those situations is that everyone gets the same 15 minutes. Everyone gets the same opportunity to get their shot. What we all do with that time is an excellent process to watch unfold.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Nightlife * Daylife * Every life, I specialize in music, entertainment, and concert photography, and I have a knack for getting those nuanced candid moments. I love the in-between moments where the bold and saturated are just turning into those middle moments of peace and calm. In the pockets of time where musicians share a glance, look, or feel with each other. Those are the moments I love to live in. I’m most proud of seamlessly blending who I am into my photography. I don’t talk much; I just let my work speak for itself.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I think just how flexible and creative I can be. I have worked in high-stress environments for years and have been thrown into every situation, time constraint, impossible set or backdrop, or outlandish demand you could imagine. I’m calm, laid back, and malleable enough to get the job done exactly how the artist, subject, or creative had envisioned.
