Oyin Johnson, LMT

Hi Oyin, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have been a massage therapist for the past 11 years now.

After completing my undergraduate studies in 2008, I took some time to figure out what I wanted to do next. I spent the years 2009-2012 working in various places before looking into massage therapy, which I stumbled across while searching for other jobs within my original field of psychology and mentoring youth.

I had begun to lose interest, and an advertisement appeared for Irene’s Myomassology Institute in Southfield, MI. I had dabbled in massage with family and friends growing up and had often been complimented on my abilities even while being untrained, so I was curious about whether those earlier praises were truly warranted or were just familial flattery.

I toured the school and decided to enroll, and the rest is pretty much history! I have been providing therapeutic work since 2013 and am currently a lead therapist at a spa in Troy, MI, called Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa. I enjoy my work and being a part of someone’s health and wellness regimen!

We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
For the most part, it’s been a fairly nice journey, but there have definitely been moments of challenges and uncertainty. The most challenging one is being an entrepreneur/business owner.

There are a lot of variables to consider in order to build a successful business, and I’m still learning what works and what doesn’t for my professional goals.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar with what you do, what can you tell them about what you do?
I currently work at a spa located in Troy, MI, and I have my own mobile massage business, Milk & Honey Massage Therapy.

I provide therapeutic Swedish and deep tissue work and reflexology. I also incorporate Thai, sports, and shiatsu techniques and offer prenatal massage for expectant mothers.

What matters most to you?
My main focus is providing quality service to my clients and facilitating the body’s own healing process.

If I can reflect back on my life and feel like I’ve helped someone at least feel better, heal better, or even just encourage them to make self-care a priority, even if I only see them once, then I will feel like I served my purpose.
