Conversations with Boy Blue

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Boy Blue.

Boy Blue

Hi Boy Blue, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for sharing your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
My initial exposure to music was through Guitar Hero. It was a holiday gift when I was nine years old, and at that time, I was living in a small Midwest town with virtually no music scene. Guitar Hero exposed me to music I otherwise wouldn’t have discovered on my own, and eventually, that led to teaching myself real guitar.

From there, I got into producing, slowly working through different software and making music during my free time. After high school, I attended the Clive Davis program at NYU, where I officially got my start in this business. A project with a classmate caught fire and kickstarted my career.

Now, I live in Los Angeles, working full-time as a producer and songwriter.

Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
The road has been anything but smooth!

The music industry is an increasingly difficult landscape to navigate. Whether you’re an aspiring producer, songwriter, or artist, the market has never been more saturated. And with evolving mediums like TikTok, there’s no barrier to entry. As a creative, it’s imperative to identify the unique qualifiers that set you apart from others, which is an aspect of my craft that I continue to nurture.

Additionally, there are lots of factors that can influence a career that are often outside of someone’s direct control. The music industry can be very bizarre, with new obstacles to face every single day. One thing that has helped me in music and life in general is letting go of things I can’t control. If an artist doesn’t like a song I made for them, that’s ok.

Keep it moving, and maybe find someone new who might like it. If a release date gets pushed back due to varying factors, no problem. I’ll be just as excited when the record comes out at a later date! As long as you’re confident in the work you do and the effort you put in, you should hang your head high, no matter the outcome.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a music producer and songwriter based in Los Angeles, California. I started in the music industry during my freshman year in NYU’s Clive Davis program. A song I worked on with a classmate became a viral hit, spreading like wildfire all over Spotify, YouTube, and Musical.ly (pre-TikTok!). Since then, I’ve had a handful of records that perform well on social media. What sets me apart is creating sonic cues that translate well to visual expression. Certain lyrics/production choices prompt different types of fan creative expression, leading to a deeper connection with the song.

My goal is to bring the best out of the artists I work with and help them actualize their creative visions. What brings me the most pride is seeing my songs performed in front of sold-out crowds. Building something from the ground up that resonates with a mass audience is a feeling I cherish deeply. Other qualities that distinguish me from others are my innate musical abilities (i.e., perfect pitch), relentless work ethic, competitive spirit, and out-of-the-box thinking.

Any big plans?
My goal is to be a combination of my two favorite producers: Max Martin and Pharrell. The former has an unparalleled catalog of superhits, while the latter is a cultural trailblazer whose signature sound has broken multiple A-list artists. My hope is to continue to participate in the up-and-coming pop scene here in Los Angeles.

I feel there’s a lot I can add to the creative process for both established and burgeoning artists. Ultimately, I will use these successes to start my own company in the music industry. Whether that’s a record label, publisher, or management company, I’m determined to become established enough to create a path for the next generation of artists to thrive.
