Today, we’d like to introduce you to Jessie Churchill.
Hi Jessie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I was born in Pennsylvania and lived in Toronto, Minnesota, Michigan, and West Virginia before moving permanently to Michigan.
Most of my childhood years were spent in the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia, where one of my best friends was the niece of the Astronomer Carl Sagan. I remember having dinner with him at her house, and I knew I was talking to a famous scientist. This was the time in my life when I first started thinking about the Mysteries of Life and the Universe.
On my father’s side of my family tree, I am related to Winston Churchill and also Giles Corey, the only male who was executed in the Salem Witch Trials. I’ve been an artist my whole life and always felt the need to create. After high school in Michigan, I devoted myself to making art, studying Religions, Theosophy, and Quantum Physics, and researching the Strange and Unusual. I was offered a job working for MUFON, the Mutual UFO Network, which I declined. I apprenticed and worked for an Art and Framing Gallery.
I was heavily involved in the Port Huron area art scene, organizing and hosting many group and solo shows. In 2011, I purchased my property in Croswell Michigan. In 2021, during the Covid Pandemic, I fell in love with the Maine Coon Cat breed and imported seven beautiful Maine Coon cats from Ukraine and Russia. I started my business Magic Moon Maine Coons, and I now breed TICA-registered Maine Coon Cats with award-winning Pedigrees.
They live with me in my home as part of my family, and I am passionate about maintaining their pure bloodlines and placing them with appropriate homes. I am still an active artist as well, with a studio full of projects that are in revolving states of progress. Any spare time I have is used to continue my studies and explorations of the Universe and the Strange and Unusual. I’m a busy woman!
We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My relation Giles Corey is famous for his quote “More Weight!” and his story and quote have always stuck with me. When I decided to become self-employed, I set personal goals for myself, and it was indeed a long road full of obstacles to get to where I am today.
Anyone can make their dreams come true and do what they love. The key is determination and always keeping an eye on the intended destination. Look at the whole road, and don’t let bad weather stop your travel. I like my current place on the road, but I always have more goals and more roads to traverse.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Magic Moon Maine Coons?
We breed TICA-registered, health-tested, purebred European Maine Coons with award-winning Pedigrees. All kittens are raised in my home as part of the family. We have been specializing in Black Smoke kittens but recently added Silver Shaded and Odd eyed Queens to the Cattery, so we will be having a variety of beautifully colored kittens this Summer!
I’m located in Croswell Michigan, but can deliver kittens anywhere in the United States. As for my artwork, I’m currently working on a series of 2D oil paintings of fictional birds and mythological creatures, as well as a themed series of 3D art using found objects, clay, collages, and dollhouses of different sizes. I have been collecting vintage dollhouses, and they are slowly becoming a village of the surreal. I have plans for a solo show in the works!
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love where I live because I am able to be close to Nature and the Elements. I have a family of deer in my yard every day and an abundance of bird life. Croswell is a small, friendly town with family-owned businesses and friendly neighbors.
I am close to Lake Huron and State Park land. Hiking and beach walks are always options, and I love them! Sometimes, living in a small town gets to me, and I miss museums music venues and varieties of restaurant choices, but when I want those things, I can just travel to find them.
