Inspiring Conversations with Logan Byrne of Byrne Law

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Logan Byrne.

Logan Byrne

Hi Logan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I graduated from Eastern Michigan University in 2017 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminology. I graduated Magna Cum Laude and was awarded the Outstanding Academic Achievement in Criminology Award in 2016 and 2017. After graduating from Eastern Michigan University, I attended Michigan State University College of Law. Near my junior year of undergrad, I decided that I wanted to go to graduate school, and Law School seemed like a natural transition. I applied and was accepted to Michigan State University College of Law.

During law school, I served as President of the Intellectual Property Law Society, where I learned the value of effective communication and compromise. I also gained extensive experience in immigration law matters. I worked as a law clerk for Saint Vincent Catholic Charities’ Immigration Law Clinic, a student clinician at Michigan State University College of Law Immigration Law Clinic, and a legal intern for the Immigrant Legal Resource Center in San Francisco, California.

Additionally, in law school, I gained experience in the areas of victim advocacy and estate planning while working for the Michigan Coalition to End Domestic & Sexual Violence and Crenshaw Peterson & Associates. Ultimately, in law school, I learned that I was passionate about immigration law and public interest areas of the law. I knew no matter what path I took, I wanted to focus on helping underserved and underrepresented individuals.

After graduating from law school, I worked as an associate attorney for a labor and employment law firm in Saginaw, Michigan, where he focused on employment, construction, and labor law issues for locally and nationally recognized businesses and a variety of employment immigration matters for both businesses and individuals. After leaving the firm, I began working for the Hon. Elizabeth Kelly of the Genesee County 7th Judicial Circuit Court. In Genesee County, I most notably advised the Court on issues surrounding the Flint Water Crisis felony criminal cases.

After leaving Genesee County, I worked full-time for the Hon. Rosemarie Aquilina of the Ingham County 30th Judicial Circuit Court. I advised Judge Aquilina on criminal matters and helped design and plan a new treatment court focused on rehabilitating juvenile weapons offenders. In both Genesee and Ingham counties, I gained extensive experience reviewing, analyzing, and writing orders in response to post-trial motions.

While working for Judge Kelly and Judge Aquilina, I campaigned for State Representative in Michigan’s 77th House District, which includes Ingham, Eaton, and Clinton counties. Following my campaign for state representative, I acted as field director and political advisor for a successful circuit court judicial race in Ingham County.

I currently own and operate my own law firm, Byrne Law, PLLC. I went full-time at the firm in September 2023. The firm is located in Lansing and focuses on immigration law, criminal law, abuse and neglect law, election law, and political consulting. Notably, one of my key practice areas involves providing advice to other criminal defense attorneys on the intersection between criminal law and immigration law. More specifically, I help advise attorneys on whether criminal convictions will make immigrant defendants deportable, and I help fashion plea deals that accomplish both parties’ objectives while avoiding deportation or other immigration consequences.

Currently, the majority of my caseload is abuse and neglect cases where I represent parents in CPS proceedings. However, as mentioned above, I also have criminal law clients, immigration clients, and election law clients. Additionally, I am currently helping run two political campaigns. I am the fundraising advisor for a State Representative’s reelection campaign and the social media and advertising advisor for a local-level campaign.

We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I did not always know that I wanted to be a lawyer. Originally, I was studying criminology to do something in the law enforcement field. However, I learned that I did not want to go that route, but I knew that I still wanted to do something where I was helping people. So, ultimately, I decided to pursue law school.

Although law school was stressful and involved a lot of hard work, it was worth it. Law school helped shape me as a person, shaped how I think, and developed me into a great lawyer. Law school is hard for everyone, but it is also a great experience, and I have some very fond memories of it.

I graduated from law school in 2020 during COVID. I was lucky enough to have a job at a law firm during that time, so I worked for a firm and studied for the bar exam simultaneously. I ended up taking both Michigan and California’s bar exams in 2020 and passed both. As such, I became a lawyer in 2020. It took several years for me to figure out where I wanted to practice law, what kind of law I wanted to practice, and what kind of organization I wanted to work for. Ultimately, I came to the realization that I wanted to be my own boss and open my own firm.

I took the leap of faith in 2023, and it has been a great experience. Although running a business comes with its challenges, the positives greatly outweigh the negatives. I couldn’t be happier with the decision that I made, and my business has been growing at a healthy rate. Likewise, I have received a lot of positive feedback from clients. I am happy to be able to help people navigate some of the most stressful times in their lives.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about Byrne Law, PLLC?

What was your favorite childhood memory?
I grew up on a farm in rural Michigan, raised animals, and participated in 4-H.

During my time in 4-H, I raised ducks, chickens, turkeys, geese, and sheep. Growing up on a farm, you learn an appreciation for nature and animals. You also develop a very strong work ethic at a young age.
