Today we’d like to introduce you to John Suhr.
Hi John, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
We started as a band of two rappers and two singers called “Mr. Idgaf And The Back Of The Class”. The concept was created by Mr. Idagf, A.K.A, and John Suhr, who also produced, played, and arranged all musical instrumentations. The idea was to build a band of misfits, based on teachers who are flawed, but honest.
Our members were Professor Ely, Ms Red, Sir Jinn, and Mr. Idgaf. The goal was to use all styles of music to tell our stories. Our performances focus on high energy and our ability to pull in the audience, making them feel like part of the class. We played all around Michigan, opening for various national acts, and headlining closer to home, Lansing, M.I.
After the COVID pandemic, our band has been slimmed down and now goes by “The Back Of The Class”. It consist of Mr. Idgaf and Sir Jinn, A.K.A, Johnathon Suhr. Now we are a father-son duo who pack a lyrical punch. We focus on social injustice, politics, and current events. I like to think of our approach as a “Party against the machine”.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Covid was the biggest struggle. Besides that, the road has been fun. We have a dedicated following. We are very inclusive and like to think of every member of the audience as part of the class. We just had a blast performing together.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I have worked in the medical industry for 25 years. I worked in the lab and was proud of showing up every day to the scariest place at the time. We rolled with all of the unknown and changes as they came, in hopes of protecting the community. It was a wild time.
How do you think about luck?
Bad luck has given us the stories to tell. Good luck has brought the music and people together and put us in a position to share it.
