Growing up on the east side of Detroit, I was immersed in the warmth of a close-knit family that valued every moment and cherished the bonds we shared. After graduating high school with high honors in 2014, I embarked on my academic journey at Michigan State University. Initially uncertain about my path, I explored various majors before finally finding my calling in child development. Despite the uncertainty, my determination to find my niche led me to persevere through four major changes before graduating in 2019.
The onset of the pandemic in 2020 brought both challenges and blessings. Amidst the chaos, I welcomed my son, Julian, into the world. However, our joy was tempered by the heartbreaking separation caused by my contraction of COVID-19 during childbirth. Despite the initial hardships, the forced pause from work allowed for invaluable bonding time with Julian. As the world around us slowed down, I found solace in the precious moments spent nurturing and caring for my newborn son. In 2022, the arrival of my daughter, Liliana, marked a new chapter in my journey. While her birth was comparatively easier, it brought with it unexpected challenges in the form of postpartum depression.
Struggling to reconcile my identity amidst the demands of motherhood, I found myself grappling with a sense of purposelessness. Despite holding a degree in child development, I felt disconnected from my professional aspirations and yearned to find meaning in my purpose. It was during the planning of Liliana’s first birthday celebration that fate intervened. Disappointed by the lackluster offerings in the local soft play industry, I saw an opportunity to fill a void. Drawing upon my experiences and fueled by a newfound sense of purpose, I ventured into the soft play industry with determination and resilience.
With unwavering commitment, I transformed adversity into opportunity, laying the foundation for what would soon become Groovy Jungle. Starting from scratch, I poured all my energy and resources into building Groovy Jungle from the ground up. Every setback and challenge fueled my determination, propelling me forward on my entrepreneurial journey. Despite the lingering effects of postpartum depression and the uncertainties of the pandemic, I remained steadfast in my pursuit of success.
As Groovy Jungle began to take shape, I found myself channeling the resilience I had cultivated throughout my journey. Every obstacle became an opportunity for growth, and every setback was a lesson in perseverance. Through sheer grit and determination, Groovy Jungle emerged as an up-and-coming success, fulfilling not only my entrepreneurial aspirations but also serving as a testament to the power of resilience and determination in overcoming adversity.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My journey has been far from smooth. Like many, I’ve faced numerous challenges along the way. The onset of the pandemic brought unexpected hurdles, from the separation from my newborn son due to contracting COVID-19 during childbirth to navigating the complexities of postpartum depression after the birth of my daughter.
Additionally, finding my professional purpose amidst changing career paths and grappling with self-doubt added layers of difficulty. Venturing into entrepreneurship with Groovy Jungle was another daunting step, fraught with uncertainties and setbacks. Building a business from the ground up requires immense dedication and perseverance, especially in the face of financial constraints and the inherent risks of starting a new venture.
Overcoming these challenges demanded resilience and unwavering commitment, but each obstacle ultimately served as a valuable lesson in growth and perseverance.
