Today, we’d like to introduce you to Mary Lewis.
Mary, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey to becoming the CEO of the largest free clinic in Michigan has been anything but conventional. Growing up in a family deeply rooted in healthcare, with generations of health providers before me, it seemed almost predestined that I would follow suit. However, my path took unexpected turns, ultimately shaping me into the leader I am today.
From an early age, the footsteps of my mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother an indigenous healer named Mary Woolie, echoed the importance of serving others through healthcare. After high school I immediately enrolled in college. However, I quickly discovered that the college track wasn’t right for me at that time, and I chose not to return after my freshman year. A pivotal moment arrived when my mother presented me with the two options: “Get a job or go back to school.” I decided to return to school and enrolled in the Medical Assisting program at Ross Medical Education Center. The decision changed my life.
At Ross, I found my passion ignited. Graduating with a diploma in medical assisting, I later became a certified medical assistant, setting the stage for a diverse and enriching career journey. From pediatrics to cardiology, from clinical management to program direction, I embraced every opportunity that came my way. Each role and each experience served as a steppingstone, shaping my skills, and broadening my knowledge and expertise within the healthcare landscape.
My journey, marked by a machine-type grind and resilience, led me to the helm of the Dr. Gary Burnstein Community Health Clinic. The culmination of my diverse experiences uniquely prepared me for the challenges and responsibilities of leading an organization dedicated to providing essential healthcare services to those in need.
Let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
Obstacles and challenges have been a defining feature of my journey but have also been the catalysts for growth and resilience. Raised by a mother who epitomized perseverance, I learned the importance of confronting challenges head-on early. My mother’s unwavering dedication to providing the best life for me, even while working three jobs, instilled in me a profound sense of determination.
Attending a private school from fourth to twelfth grade was just one testament to her sacrifices. However, despite her efforts, my greatest challenge lay in my self-doubt and comparison to others’ journeys. It took me time to recognize the value of my unique path and the strength it provided me with.
My journey to obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree in 2018, at the age of 47, encompassed the essence of overcoming challenges. Completing my degree 30 years after graduating from high school while balancing a family and full-time job as a practice director was no small feat. Yet, each obstacle reminded me of my mother’s resilience and determination.
Through her example, I learned that obstacles are not roadblocks but growth opportunities. They challenge us to push beyond our limits, redefine what is possible, and emerge stronger and more resilient on the other side.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
