Check Out Sara Crosby’s Story

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Sara Crosby.

Sara Crosby

Hi Sara, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Sara, and friends and family call me Bear, where I came up with my business name, Bear Necessities. I’ve been creating things with my hands for as long as I can remember, but I didn’t start selling until I was on maternity leave from bartending in 2015. It started with pouring soy candles into vintage vessels I had collected from my thrifting ventures.

I watched my father do candle-making as a hobby, so it felt natural to follow in his footsteps. When a light went off, I was dabbling with air plant terrariums, and I wanted to put one into a macrame plant holder. Macrame is another craft that ran in the family; my mother made macrame in the 70s! I quickly realized I had learned these knots before while making friendship bracelets as a kid and again in high school with hemp bracelets and necklaces. Shortly after that, macrame made a huge comeback as I fell in love with the craft and its endless possibilities.

In 2021, I asked a friend to teach me how to crochet, and of course, I fell in love with the endless possibilities of this craft and started to hyper-focus on crochet. Now that I have a few years of dabbling with both, they’ve become seasonal for me, and I’ll crochet more in the winter and macrame in the summer.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I feel fiber arts can often be underappreciated (for example, look at all the gorgeous and unused Afghans surrendered to the goodwill). Sometimes, it can be hard for people to recognize the time, effort, and especially love that goes into something so meticulously hand-crafted.

Sometimes it’s discouraging when I’m selling to the public at a craft show and someone audibly scoffs at my prices, when they’re not even outrageous prices, it’s just me asking to be paid a living wage, for my time and knowledge of my craft.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in all things fiber. I’m known for my large macrame pieces and colorful style of fiber artistry. I’m most proud of passing on my creativity to my young daughter and creating with her at every chance.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I’ve been lucky to have many supportive women creators at my fingertips, cheering me on and encouraging me to know my worth.
